I finally get my lincese tomorrow.. and i need a car badly.. so today i saw a classfied for a Nissan 300zx 1990 for 7,900.. here are the specs:

NISSAN 300ZX 1990 TWIN TURBO, loaded, 450 hp, turbo timer, leather, T-top, Wings West body kit, Duel Greddy exhaust, Stillen performance, and blow off valves. Excellent condition. Asking $7,900. Please call (XXX) XXXXXXX ask for Danny

anyone have any comments on where or not this a good deal... or should i just buy a 240sx for like 3 grand? thanks

450+ hp for your first car?
No. Unless you want to pay more for insurance then the car, and probably die in the process.

i have no clue.. i would probaly have to give the guy a call to find out... hopefully not too many though

havent checked yet... its gonna be under my parents.... hopefully not too bad.. they both have pretty good records..

SHOULD you? Probably not since your insurance will be astronomical with that vehcile, regardless of who's paying.

That being said, the early 90s 300ZX is one of my all-time favorite cars. It drives SO smoothly under normal conditions and is so calm, but step on the gas and it'll fly. I've always said when I get older and I'm *hopefully* wealthy I'd like to buy a couple of "classic" cars for tooling around on a Sunday afternoon. A 1956 Corvette and an early 90s 300ZX (which will technically be a classic by that time although I doubt it will carry any serious prestige) are at the top of my list.

First I would question the HP of it. If it's true, then the boost has REALLY been cranked up.

That in mind, as well as looking at the after market parts, I would really question the long term durability of this car. I would venture to guess this thing has been ragged to hell and back. The body may be in decent shape, but I'm guessing that just about everything else mechanically speaking has had a very, very hard life.

I'd steer clear of it, just as I almost always steer clear of any car that has been tricked out.

HAHAHAHAHHA this after saying "I finally get my lincese tomorrow.." Trust me. You aren't getting this car because insurance will be ASTRONOMICAL. A 16 year old (?) who just got insurance in a 450 horsepower car? Insurance companies aren't stupid. They realize that you're going to wrap it around a tree after a month. Insurance will cost you thousands a year.

Oh I forgot do you have investments? Cause you need cash to keep this car going. It costs half the price of a new civic. Wouldn't everyone rather drive this? Yes. Why aren't they at half the cost? Repair bill is your answer. This car will need a new transmission and engine rebuild probably the day you drive it away! As mentioned below any car like this has had the crap driven out of it.

i acualty turn 18 in less than 2 months.. i just had to wait for my lincese due to vermonts lame new laws... my dad does sell toyota's so i can get new ones at cost.. its just i dont know if i want one right now because they have jack for used cars and the only toyota i am really interested in is the celica but they are 14,000 maybe with the discount..

thanks so far with the input guys..

Get the celica - if you can afford a good bit of money for insurance the celica won't screw you hard like the 300zx and it will be very reliable for you.

Just cause he is getting his license tomorrow doesn't mean he is 17, althought it does sound like it in his post. For all we know, he could be 35 and just came here from another country and needs to get his license...he could have 15yrs of driving experience for all we know.

That said, if you are 16-17, I wouldn't suggest that you buy a 450hp car for your first car..you will kill yourself. Secondly the insurance will be more than the car. Thirdly, a 300ZX TT will need routine maintenance and that will be quite expensive from time to time. Finally, NEVER EVER BUY A MODDED CAR!! How do you know that the 300ZX is tuned properly? We know its modded cause it has 150hp more than stock, has a turob timer, probably has an ecu upgrade as well, etc...

I'd suggest you think this over and talk to your parents about it.

Get something a little slower my man, you're gonna either wreck that thing or hurt yourself. My buddy drove a 300ZX with over 400HP and he came out scared after test driving it, and he's driven some nice cars (S2000, a high 13 sec RX7, etc...). Laying into the throttle in 2nd gear will throw the rear end out, and for a first car, that's pretty extreme. Go easier, trust us here 🙂

Trust me your gonna have the temptation to floor it mid-corner and you'll piss your pants and prolly end up in a ditch.

That's the main reason I'm scared of doing the SR20DEt swap in my 240sx (apart from not affording it as well), I doubt I'll be able to handle it. Right now I'm swinging the rear out (luckly its a little and i can control it)..but if I had 200+hp going to the pavement...man...that wouldnt' be safe.

Get a 240SX..learn how to handle it...learn how to respect it...then move on to a 300ZX...thats my plan! 😀

Ditto. It's good to start out progressively. That way you learn to drive well and responsibly. Once you iron that out and get a good job you progress to a better car armed with good judgment, a good driving record and a heap of responsibility/experience under your belt.

I started out with an Australian model VW we called "Sakbayan" with oh i don't know, 50hp mebbe? Diesel powered and could go through floods like it was a hot knife over butter.

Then alternately a bug, ford laser, diahatsu charade. Stopped driving for a while after that.

As i got in the US my first car was a new Civic. Drove that for a couple of years and learned the ins-outs of US driving (which is very different and honestly is also pretty tame compared to where i came from).

As my needs grew i gave up the Civic and got a better and more powerful car. For some reason even though i love to race i've learned to keep that side of me at the tracks. Humility from driving all those other cars? Perhaps.

Let's look at this without looking at your age.

You should not buy this car. Why?

First of all, if you are under twenty and are single, the 300ZX Twin Turbo is most likely the most expensive car to insure that isn't an exotic car. Second of all, you have to question why the car is so cheap. In any case, you need to take a car that you look at to a mechanic to get a full check up.

A Wings West body kit is just about the worst investment one performance car owner could make. They're cheap, and prone to break easily. A Car that has been tuned to 450HP is not reliable. It most likely that all the owner did was turn up the boost on the car via boost control. That's a lot of stress on the block that will surely shorten the life of the car.

You can expect these problems:
Fried Piston Rings
Cracked Cylinder
Nonfiring Cylinder
Bad Compression
Low boost

Now let's get back to your experience as a driver. You live in Vermond. You most likely get snow in the winter. A 450HP car is not where you want ot be in the middle of a storm. This holds true for the much less powerful 240SX. They are PERFORMANCE oriented car with near 50/50 weight distribution and RWD. They have very accurate handling and in the hands of an experienced driver will drive you right into a tree, or right off the off ramp.

Anyways...you're young. You probably want this because it's a flashy car. Girls don't like old cars. Every girl I've talked to hates a mint 1990 911 because it looks old. Money doesn't buy you happiness.

But in a few years buy a 300ZX. Not a TUNED one. Buy one that is stock, then tune it to what you like. That's a better investment, although I can't really say if buying a 300ZXTT is an investment at all😀

Good luck in your decision.

For $8000 you have plenty of other safe purchases. Might I suggest an Audi Coupe Quattro or Audi 90 Sport? These cars are all wheel drive and fairly reliable. Even though I stress that you should not get a RWD car, how about a BMW 318i. Good handling, enough power and the quality of a BMW?

Just things to keep in mind🙂

*Thinks you should get a Volvo 850 Turbo*

You absolutely should not buy this as a first car. The maintainence and insurance points are very valid. That said, and seeing that you're not exactly made of money either, the fact remains that before you buy any sort of "powerful" car you should already be a very competent driver. If you can master controlling a 135 horse celica or something then hopping into a 450 horse Z won't be a huge shock. I've been driving my 130 horse Accord for a good two years now. I feel comfortable hopping into my friends 200+ horse volvo and mashing the pedal. I also feel comfortable putting a 300+ horse motor into my current car since I know what to expect from the car in most any situation. Only when you've reached this level should you get yourself a monster.

A mechanic friend of mine services MBs, BMWs and Porsches. He's driven plenty of M3s and such but he was scared when he hopped into a 911 Turbo and hit the gas. That's a 400 horse car and he been driving this kinds of cars for years. You're fresh out of the gate and expect to control that 450 horse monster of a Z? I hope you don't live near me.

Buy my '87 Scirocco 8v. Its a great first car, easy on gas, mechanically very sound w/a few mods & only $2500 !!!

Better yet, buy my GTi in my sig!

Fast enough to get you in trouble...serious trouble, yet easy on the insurance.

Great car 🙂

Another thing is that on that car the turbos will usually need to be replaced if they are the original ones, and the car has over 50K miles on it. If it's been hammered on they go faster. I would recommend something that is easier on your insurance as well.

You just got your license. I don't care what you think, you aren't a good driver yet. No way should your parents let you get a 300z, let alone one modded to 450 horsepower. You ARE going to wrap it around a tree. And I'd be happy if you proved me wrong.

There are plenty of fast cars out there that aren't simply as dangerous as this one for you. They won't be as fast, but more than enough to get your rocks off. Get an older Celica, or a VW GTI. Quick, nimble handling, fun to drive. That's the most you need at this point. Trust me, and trust the rest of the posters here.

About the 240SX...it is a handful in the winter, but if you have winter tires and you learn to not floor the throttle every single time, you can drive it in the winter safely. First practice in a empty parking lot...learn the advantages of throttle steering...that will help you immensely.

Alternately, you can do what most young teenagers in Toronto do, drive a early 90s Corolla, Cavalier, Civic, etc..if a girl wants you cause of your car...tell her to take the bus!
