Should I buy a 1995 Ford Contour GL - $2500?

OK... need opinions extremely quickly...

I discovered that one of my cousins is selling a 1995 Ford Contour GL for $2500... has 170,000 miles on it... and was once in a flood, but was reconstructed, and has run flawlessly since then... my cousin has driven it four hours a day for the last year, and not had any problems with it. Does anybody have advice? I am really, really needing a car... I don't have one, and at this point, I just need something. I'm going to have a full time job starting in June, and I would be able to make car payments on something better starting in mid-July or so... I would probably trade in whatever vehicle I have at the time.

So... any thoughts?

If the car is kept in good shape and runs like this guy says it has been, it'll be fine.

My domestic is 8 years old, and aside from the huge dent of the passenger side of my car thanks to retarded yuppie ricer scum, it works flawlessly. All I do is take care of my tires, oil it when it needs, and check the belts and filters every third oil change.

But is your car a Ford Contour??? I am a big Ford fan and will stick by most of the vehicles made by them. The Ford Contour, Mercury Mystique, and the 1999-2003 Cougar are not quaility vehicles. Some of the earlier models had as many as eleven Field Service Actions against them.

My wife owned one when we got married. Sold it @ 70k to my dad so we could get a larger vehicle. He isn't a domestic car person, but thought it was comfortable and decently powered (4 banger).

HE sold it at 110k to my sister who has had many problems with it, primarily because she thinks all cars are meant to be driven pedal crushed to the firewall.

She blew up the transmission on the car, has had minor electrical gremlins (traced to clockspring in the steering/switch area), and other minor problems.

She is selling it back to my dad at 145k and I am sure it will run fine again.

When we originally sold it to him, I had to replace the throttlebody and IAC valve since both parts were shot and it wouldnt idle worth a darn.

If you've had your car all or most of it's life, and you've taken good care of it (as it sounds you have) then you shouldn't have as many problems, of course not. I have a 6 year old Chevy myself with 94k miles on it. I'm the second owner but the first owner didn't take very good care of the car- most problems I have are stemmed from that initial neglect (really it's in great condition for the number of miles, but it's really in better condition now than when I got it 40k miles ago )
So, really what I'm saying, is if you want a domestic car, I'd consider it advisable to get a newer one. If you have 2500 bucks to drop on a car, you could do much better than a Ford Contour, even for a few months.
