Should I buy a 1993 3000gt vr4 non turbo automatic?

The car is a 1993 3000gt vr4 non turbo.. Automatic stock. No mods besides an intake.. I know I know it's an auto but I don't care I need a car
It has 111k miles on it and it's only $1800 due to some dents lol. But how long dou think it'll last me? Because it's my first car

First car...how much do you have to spend? I wouldn't start with an almost-20-yo 3000GT if I didn't have to.
 
I'd be nervous about buying a "non-turbo" 3000GT VR-4 because VR-4 designates a twin-turbo V6 engine trim... besides the 3000GT's reputation for shattering transmissions under heavy use.
 
I don't see any problem with buying a non-existant variant of a relatively uncommon 20 year old, 100,000+ mile sports car full of advanced-for-the-era technology that's prone to reliability issues, especially as your first and only car to use as a daily driver.

Before he buys this car he should stab himself in the nuts with a soldering iron, that will give him a good approximation of what owning the car will be like.

1) No such thing as a non-turbo VR-4. The car is either an S or an SL.

2) The turbo models were notoriously unreliable. The S and SL models were only slightly better.

3) Never buy a car that the seller doesn't know anything about. If the seller is calling it a "VR-4 non-turbo", then you should run like the wind. If the seller doesn't even know what kind of car it is, he probably didn't take care of it either.

I knew someone who had one of these things (mid-90's GT3000 VR4 in white). It was a money pit.
 
For their time, they were nice looking vehicles, and the VR-4 was pretty quick considering it was heavy as balls.

This would be one of the least recommended vehicles for a DD or 1st car though.

You kind of had a double-edged sword with these things :

Non-Turbo base or SL model : slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, but so weak that the drivetrain wasn't too bad.

VR-4 model : pretty quick, but has a glass tranny/diff that is underbuilt for the power the motor puts out, has 250 million moving parts that are all jammed into unthinkably tight spacing, all of them quite pricey to replace and difficult to find on the used market.

So yeah, add me to the chorus of hellllll no.
 
Also the VR4 had all-wheel steering. What could possibly go wrong with that? :awe:

I had 4WS on an old Prelude of mine and never had trouble, but I think it was a passive/mechanical system vs. the electronically controlled 4WS in the VR4. I had two DSM AWD turbo vehicles, and both of them raped my wallet repeatedly 😀 Never again.
 
well the OP is looking at a non-VR4 with a badge on it, so it won't have all the VR-4 problems.

The VR-4 has tons of problems. I'd still love to have one in good condition. Awesome car.
