Should I buy 7800GTX or 2 6800GT for SLI?

I plan to make major upgrade on my PC and these are what I plan to get:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 1MB 90nm Rev. E San Diego (939)
2 GB (4 pcs 512) DDR (400) PC-3200 Corsair XMS (TWINX1024-3200XLPT)
COOLER MASTER WAVEMASTER TAC-T01

I'm still thinking about graphics department though. I can't decide between single 7800GTX or 2 6800GT for SLI. What would you do if you were in my situation??

Single 7800GTX without question- that way you can upgrade to SLI later if you would like not to mention the 7800GTX tends to be faster then SLId 6800GTs.

7800GTX will save $200 give you better performance and lets you easily add on anotherone later when the next gen games starts thrashing a single 7800GTX.

7800GTX also is ready for windows UDA in vista.

7800GTX will be as fast or faster, quieter, use less power, cheaper, and let you add another for SLI in the future. Easy choice.

Well, instead of all the quoting and requoting going on in this thread, I'll say get the 7800 for the same reasons stated above, but also why are you using 4x512mb dimms when it might be better to use 2x1gig modules. With 4 modules, you'll have to run the mem at 2T command rate, and your performance will be slightly lower.

Not even noticably slower (1-3%). I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Personally I would not worry about that either, but the OP seems to state that he is planning on getting that gear. If he has not already bought it, then why not go for the extra 1-3% performance increase? Money is not a huge concern, if he is contemplating a SLI vs 7800 setup.

OC will also be hurt with 4 Dimms.

While money may not be an issue, i dont think advising him to get rid of his current memory in favor of 2x denser chips is a wise move. If he were upgrading past 2gig that would, obviously, be different, but it is simply not worth "upgrading" to 2x dimms.

He said that the memory was something he planned on getting. Without any other info form OP that would leave all of to believe that he hasn't already Purchased it. Even if there wasn't a performance reason fo getting the 2x 1GB It would still make more sense becuase you would have to toss or sell your memory at a loss when you want to upgrade that.

Oh... my bad. I was under the impression that he already have 4x 512mb sticks.

Hell, if you dont have it, definitely go for 2x 1gig.

edit: oh and pray that Rivatuner brings out a revision allowing you to unlock the pipes/ps...hehe
