Should I be jelous of those with Klipsch 5.1?

I have Klipsch 4.1. Yes, good, yes, loud 🙂 The question is, should I be jelous of those with the new Klipsch 5.1? Those are even louder, come with a semi-remote control, and a bigger 'woofer.

If I mainly play games (Audigy sound card), listen to MP3 and watch some DVDs on my PC, would it make sense to try to sell these and get the 5.1? (So I will basically end up paying $150-200 to upgrade).

Thanks for your opinions in advance...

Man, I'd kill for your sound system!!! Keep what you have! Don't lose $100-$200 just to get 5.1. You're not going to notice a difference ans you have true 4.1 surround sound now. 5.1 is just for a fifth speaker with a center channel and is more of a marketing gimmick than anything else.

on the contrary, a center channel produces a great effect on sound staging. the question would be, is it worth $100-$150 for that one speaker? id agree with FalseChristian, No. what id do is add up that extra hundred for a hammer system in the future! 😀

With you sitting so close to your speakers, and with the speakers being relitivly close to each other (as compared to a true home theater setup), the center channel is really not needed.
At these small distances, it is pretty easy to create a virtual center channel. The only reasons I would reccomend upgrading from your current setup to the 5.1's are:

a) you watch DVDs on your computer with more than one person in the room. If you do this, either only one person can sit dead center, or neither can. The downside of a virtual center channel is that you need to be pretty close to dead center for it to work correctly. If not, then the effect is lost.
b) You have lots of money and love having the newest stuff

You CAN have that semi remote with the 4,1's though, or at least somthing close to it. "How?" you ask? Unscrew the pre-amp control pod from the speaker its on and mount it within easy reach. Problem solved 🙂

Also, you don't need anything louder than the ProMedia 4.1's....played at full volume all the time you're just asking for some type of permanent hearing damage 🙂

? . . . Yes, uh maybe . . .

"jealous" . . . No!

It depends on what you want . . . I'd say listen to the 5.1 setup and see if you feel you are missing that center channel. It might make enough difference if you are really picky. Certainly the volume difference is really minor.

As for me, I don't plan to upgrade my 4.1s anytime soom.

Don't forget to be jealous of my 4.2 system 😉

Which typo? The first<< jelaous >> or edited second one <<jelous>>?

😀

EDIT: (j/k) I'm sorry, but I couldn't resist.

Well, coming from a man who has heavily used all 3 Klipsch ProMedia surround sound solutions (v.2-400, 4.1, and 5.1), YES, you should be very jealous of people with the PM 5.1s and here's why...

Center channel speaker (when you watch DVD movies, very very handy... also helps in some FPS like MOHAA, Max Payne, and RTCW).
Subwoofer... larger, much much much much much much much more responsive and wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more powerful [VERY VERY CLEAN]
Spring clip wire design for easier speaker wire upgrade [edit: for all the smart asses out there... I mean in terms of sound quality]

IMHO, the new speakers have no noticable improvement over the PM 4.1 speakers so nothing to be jealous of there.

I would agree that the 5.1s dont have much more to offer than the 4.1s. Especially if you are happy with the 4.1s. If you mainly play games, as far as I know, games that support EAX or A3D support 4 speakers, so the 5th speaker wouldnt make any difference for channel seperation. MP3s wouldnt be any different either. With 4 speakers, the MP3s get mirrored to the back speakers. Ive kind of wondered about how it would play back a stereo source on the center channel of a 5.1 setup, because if it plays a mono mix of the two channels it would hurt the seperation the music was intended to have.

DVDs then would be the only thing you see a benefit with the 5.1s. Even then, unless you are a DVD freak or a sound freak, I dont think the upgrade is worth $150-200. The center channel is evenly spread to the L and R speaker to create a "phantom" center channel, which should be good enough.

Sure the 5.1s put out more power, but when was the last time (first time?) you thought the 4.1s werent loud enough?

Hmm, I seemed to have put my edit comment on the wrong line of my original post...

And by "speakers, I mean the actual satellite speakers themselves rather than the overall package.
