Should I be able to run F.E.A.R at 1280*1024 4xAA?

Title pretty much says it all. I have a powerful system including an Opteron at 3GHz and an X1900XT at XTX speeds. I'm trying to run F.E.A.R at the settings in the title - without antialiasing I get 75FPS (that's with vsync and 75Hz refresh, so who knows what it is without sync...), but with AA I get between 30-40FPS. Is this normal? I want AA but I am reluctant to lower to res below 1280 as it's the native resolution of my LCD.

Have you tried other visual settings not as important to you to try and get 40-50fps? Keep the resolution, AA/AF, but turn off things like soft shadows and bring others to medium.

I have turned off shadows, anisotropic filtering, a bunch of things. I set everything else to medium, including txture detail and world detail. Zero change in frame rate.

You should be getting more indeed. I get 35ish+ fps at that resolution with 4x AA on my lowly 7800gs.

However, your turning down all those settings you mentioned and still not increasing your framerate tells me the problem lies elsewhere.

I turned off AA and soft shadows to gat the frame rate acceptable. Also downloading the 1.05 patch, maybe that will make a difference.

Main problem now is 'stuttering' - a drop in frame rate when I turn a corner or something. Could be textures loading. Anyone else get this? Could it be I will finally have to get 2GB of RAM? I'm on 1GB now, but it's TCC5 at ~250MHz 2.5-3-3-10...

Really? Wow, I should be kicking that thing's ass... how good is 'without a sweat', i.e. what are your actual framerates? Any stuttering? Got 2GB?

lol all I can tell you from my experience from 1 gig to 2 gig on FEAR. Faster load times, stuttering eliminated.

Goddam it, I just bought these sticks. Thanks.

Anyone wanna by a gig of OCZ TCC5?

You could try setting the textures to medium if it would help the framerates.

I just looked at the memory usage after running the game until it stuttered a couple of times - 667MB, giving a total memory useage for the whole system of 850-900MB. I know this is borderline, but why would it be paging to disk when it still has over 100MB of memory left?

Because windows likes to play it safe for some bizzare reason.

indeed lol

These settings reduce graphics card load. If turning them off does not increase framerate then you are likely bottlenecking at the CPU.

I would much rather have all of the above cranked to full than 4xAA.

From what I've read about FEAR benchmaks its that you'd have to have something very wrong with your cpu to noticably hinder performance. The tests I've seen compared an A64 3000+ and some higher end FX w/ a 2 fps difference.

Yeah. Windows starts paging long before you use all your ram, just in case some very important process will need the ram. I really wish there was a way to disable this. But yeah, get more ram. You could probably just get two more sticks of the same ram you have. The ram will run a bit slower since you have 4 sticks instead of two, but it shouldn't make too much of a difference.

I turned off the page file and all is fixed with the stuttering, also turned the texture resolution to 'high' instead of 'maximum', and cranked everything else - mem usage 500-600MB and frame rate far exceeds refresh rate. No progress on the AA, but it's not really necessary at 1280*1024 on a 19" screen. Would be nice to be able to run whatever I feel like though, considering I spent nearly £300 on this graphics card... I heard it's a problem many have experienced with FEAR - performance takes a big hit with AA on, especially with soft shadows on at the same time.

I have 2 sticks in dual channel, don't know where you got that idea 🙂 OCZ platinum 3200 rev 2 @ ~DDR 520 2.5-3-3-10, not slow by any means.

Well, I cant say for sure.

I have a 7900GTX and my monitor goes all the way up to 1920x1440.
I can get FEAR to average over 40fps at 1600x1200 with no AA.
At that resolution I really cant see the pixels on a 19" CRT.

I have been told that ATI does a little better with Lithtech games.

soft shadows in FEAR absolutely murder framerates, as does AA. i don't think AF so much, or at least not in CSS (but i dont run any AA cause i know my framerate would drop)

CRAP!
I forgot about the soft shadows.

Yup, for some reason the Soft Shadow feature of FEAR kills performance. I dont think its been fixed in any patches either.
Regardless of what video card and what drivers you have, make sure those always stay disabled. They dont look that good anyway.

If the game detects you have a high end system (Like a Radeon X1900) then it will max out all they eye-candy. You need to check each time.

I meant if you got 2 more sticks so you'd have 2gb.
