Should I be a donor?

I won't give my organs away. Some people say you don't need them after death, but I want to make sure first.

An organ donor in case I die in a car accident or something.

Yep. If you feel questionable about putting organ donor on your card like some people will tell you, then just let your family know your wishes.

<-displays organ donor on my id.

I never gave it much thought either, until my brother needed a heart and lungs. If you gotta checkout, you might as well help someone.

Why not, unless you have a religious objection.

You can save someone's life. How could you not do it?

I'd want it to be there for me, so I'll donate. Anyways, my dad said if I keel over he's selling me off for spare parts...

yes
you won't need them after you are dead
they will just get all rotten and stinky and full of worms

intestine transplant
I guess they don't realize how much spicy food I've eaten in my life. 😉

Seriously, being an organ donor is a good thing. And like the others have mentioned, you'll have no use for your organs once you're in the ground. Or, if cremation is your preference, then, again, there's no use in holding onto your organs.

IMHO TNTrulez, yes, if you don't have a religious reason for not leaving your organs behind, I think it is a good idea to sign your organ donor card. I'm an organ donor, co-signed by my mother and my best friend as required here in NY on the back of my license. When I die, I won't need them...but someone will.

I know there are not many successful heart transplantations, but man, lungs? Is it even possible for medicine to transplant human lungs? I'm pretty sure it's going to be a lot harder than with a heart. And I'm sure such operations haven't been successful so far.

Maybe kduncan5, but the doctors will make that decision when they have a close look at your organs, sign the donor card 🙂

Definately yes, my used parts wouldn't fetch much on the trade boards here anyway, darn ferengi 🙂

I would allow my family to sell my organs rather than give them away for free.

I'm all for that! If your family gives them away, they are the ONLY ones that do not profit! If people were encouraged to do this with an incentive, there would be no organ shortage.

They have been successfully transplanting heart and lungs for years now. I think you may be thinking of the artificial heart transplants that havent been successful.

.. and yes... You dont need your organs when you are buried 6ft under. Its just worm food.

why wouldn't u. 😛 what good are they to u when ur dead😛

and if ur religion objects, i'll just have to call it primitive🙂 sorry, it deserves such names🙂

No, you shouldn't. Doctors don't make all the efforts they can, if you're a donor, to save your life. No way in hell I'm giving those money-grubbing bastards a reason to not try their damndest to keep me alive if need be.

Actually Nik that's not true at all, Transplant facilities have internal Ethics commitees in addition to outside agency monitoring, a known organ donor might well receive even more effort to save his/her life. The decision to declare the patient brain dead is not made lightly.

And the family is included in the decision making process.
