Should I avoid depositing large checks via ATM?

We've had 2 different banks "lose" our deposits through the ATM's and refuse to use them for deposits anymore.
Ys, they finally "found" them (both deposited the money into someone elses accounts) but it always takes a couple of weeks to get straightened out. Much simpler to just go to the bank. (even though we've had tellers do the same thing a couple of times...)

it's depositing cash i'd be worried about

Yep, that's what I've been taught. An "insider" can't do much with a check after you endorse it without you knowing (as far as I know and I don't know much). However, nothing is stopping a $50 from being "misplaced" when they count it up.

Depends on the bank. I make all of my deposits through my bank's ATMs. Don't use 3rd parties. Aside from the transfer charge, it also increases the chances of loss.

well that's just common sense. Anyone that uses a 3rd party ATM to desposit a check is an idiot.

Yep.

Checks you have a paper trail and can issue a stop payment.

Cash = no paper trail.

Never had a problem here myself but WAMU doesnt charge you for using the teller so I like having a person process and confirm everything for me before I leave.

I've deposited 5 figure checks without a problem. As others have said, I don't do cash that way though I've heard most banks have a policy that two people have to be there when they open the envelopes. Doesn't mean two people couldn't be in on the scam obviously but it probably limits it a little.

I didn't even know you could make a deposit in a 3rd party's atm.
