Should I add more, but slower RAM?

Hello All,

I am rebuilding my dads old PC for my sister.

AMD 3000+ S754
512MB DDR400

Now, I have also got two sticks of 256MB DDR333 (dual channel) but that does not matter here.

Should I bother putting those into her system?

She just browses and occasionally uses word processing. It will be installed with XP Pro. Me and my cousins sometimes use her PC for CSS so 1GB would be beneficial at that point but is not normal use.

If I am not going to use these sticks I will probably sell them with a couple of systems I've got.

Suggestions appreciated :)

Thanks!

I guess it wouldn't hurt. I'm currently running 2x512MB 333Mhz on XP and it's ok. Don't know how much of a difference 512MB makes here.

Whats the Multi/FSB set to? 1.8GHz or 2GHz? Yes, s754 doesnt have a dual-channel memory controller so "keeping dual-ch" is truely not an issue. Though I read once dual-ch only really helps integrated video. When I get my main rig back I can test this out. Run 1 stick of 2Gb and 2x1GB.
Put the ram in and see if it lowers the clock speed of the computer... or doesn't boot (because it req's a 400FSB).

In that realm of capacities, MORE memory is ALWAYS better than taking a speed
hit on the memory. The alternative is 1000x slower paging to disk.

The options are

512 DDR400

or

512 DDR400 + 256x2 DDR333 basically

Yeah, I was leaning towards adding the RAM. XP uses ~320 doing nothing so it is worth it.

Thanks :)

More ram = rox0rz. Faster ram is also good, but not in this case where her computer is probably RAM-limited as it is.
