Should have went Core 2 Duo quicker

Got an E6850, and Gigabyte P35 board from newegg. I found the stock heat sink, and fan to be very efficient to be honest. My idle temps in Window's was around 28c, and the fan was only running at 800 rpm!?!?!? I got smart fan enabled, and it never really gets that loud. I had for a while thought my video card was to blame for my FPS drops in BF2, and other games. I was wrong, my frame rates never drop now while playing 64 man BF2. It's really incredible how much of a difference this made. I had an X2 3600+ overclocked to around 2.4 Ghz before this, and either overclocked or running at stock I had times where my fps would drop to 20-30 fps. Had all the newest chipset drivers, video drivers etc installed nothing worked. Very satisfied with my first Intel build I've built for myself since an old p1 166mmx. I've built several others for other people though.

Core 2 is certainly a good architecture.

Did you change any other specs though?
An extra 600 MHz is not to be sniffed at either...

Congrats on the C2D, they are incredibly good chips. Hopefully we'll see some real competition from AMD again once Phenom ramps up. It's getting spooky, and if AMD goes the way of 3dfx/Cyrix, then we're in for an expensive future.

Any reason you went with 6850 vs. Q6600? Once you get the 6600 to 3ghz, it outperforms the 6850 in everything, and will pay off big time with QC-ready games. Something to think about at least, you may be able to sell the 6850 in a build for someone, and grab a Q with a nice cooler, and you're set.

Nope, just new motherboard, and processor. X2 will be served well as my wifes new setup.

I don't plan on over clocking this rig. Went with something that would provide performance at stock, and tear through the selection of games I play right now. Will worry about Quad Core when the time comes to upgrade next.
