So if you hired someone who you find out needs something like this:

to read documents, uses a white cane, and keeps this from you until after he is hired, you would plot against them, try to get rid of them?

...First of all, that device would have to be provided by his/her place of work. So, in order for that to be provided, the employer would have to be aware of your disability so they could make arrangements.

Since you lied (or in your words "hid) about the fact that you had a disability, your job would not have this equipment for you to use..thus, exposing you as a fraud and unable to do your job duties which means you're going to be fired.

And you should be fired because you're a liar.

Wait, Wut?

By law in the US a person does not have to disclose their disability, and its illegal for a potential employer to ask during the interview or at anytime. . If you hire someone who has a disability, who doesnt tell you till after being hired, its illegal to fire them just because they divulged this information to you after the fact. . Doesnt matter how you feel about it. These laws are put in place to protect people with disabilities from discrimination.

In addition if they decide to tell you after being hired, and require and request accomodations, by law you have to comply.

Here is a snippet from the law of the ADA:

The American Disabilities Act (ADA) provides for the protection from discrimination of qualified candidates with disabilities who can, with or without reasonable accommodation, perform the essential functions of the position. Under the ADA, the employer only has the obligation to make "reasonable accommodations" for known disabilities.

Here is a good article on this subject, short but brief: http://www.osd.ucla.edu/docs/Articles/disclosing_your_disabilty_in_the_employment_process.htm

If you need to work a job that requires some sort of physical labor, your employer will typically ask if you need any accomodations to do your work. If you cannot see and lie about it...they have every right to fire you. Not becuase you have a disability, but becuase you cannot properly do your job duties.

Also, if you DO need accomodations then your employer will provide them for you. Lying is only setting yourself up for failure...in which case, you don't deserve a job.

Pretty simple to understand.

I think that you and/or someone you know well haven't spent much time around severely disabled people. I have several special ed teachers in my family. There are a few "workshops" around here that employ disabled adults for simple tasks such as alphabetical sorting. These are jobs that wouldn't be outsourced if it wasn't below minimum wage or government incentivized. The jobs aren't intended to provide a living wage for these individuals. The intent is to give them a purpose (most of them love going to work) and continue their real-world education. These are people that often have issues with basic social and life skills. They would not make it in a normal workplace, but getting them out of the house into a more structured environment helps them to continue learning/re-learning how to appropriately dress, speak, and act. Getting a paycheck also helps them continue enhancing their money handling and management skills. You have to understand that these are people who may still not understand correct change after paying a bill with cash. To sum it all up, these workshops are essentially providing them with a service (continuing education), but also paying them for their time.

For higher functioning disabled people and the deaf/blind, I see no reason they shouldn't be able to get a skilled job that pays a decent wage.

Yet the studies do not show this, they show these people are also exploited, and are forced to either live only on government assistance or below minimum wage. While this may be helping those with profound disabilities, it is also shown to apply to people with lesser disabilities like deafness and blindness.

So the law isn't just for the people who you think. I have been around people who are able to do all you claim, who are functioning, but because they have disability like blindness or deafness they are forced into these near zero paid jobs.

Their is a good reason why the blind continually support changes to the law, because they are one of the biggest group affected.

Even the government recognizes he difficulty in which the blind have in finding a job, which is why almost anyone is blind will qualify for SSI or SSDI, and they receive additional amounts over other disabilities because they are blind. A very low percent of the blind are actually able to find meaningful paid jobs.

So stop talking about minimum wages for the blind.

They are a lost cause from the Government's point of view.

They would benefit from less Government, less taxation, and more money in the hands of their friends and family.

Minimum Wages, in general, only serve to subjugate citizens to Government's will.

They can no longer work for wages... they must now work for Government demanded wages.

Get rid of minimum wage.

A sad reality is the majority of disabled people, such as those who are blind live off government assistance such as SSI. The reason is not because they unable to work, but that society has decided that blind people are too unproductive for meaningful work. Society treats them as if they are less capable.
Where I come from the blind use the force...they do just fine!!

This is only for special certificate holders. And it is designed so these people can work at all. It allows an employer to pay sub min wages due to the inability of the disabled person to perform the full job.

Feel free to repeal it but expect many of these disabled will lose their jobs.

WTF would the difference be???

Damn, they lost their $30 a week full time job.... boy thats gonna hurt
