DES MOINES, Iowa - Some think the idea should have been dead on arrival.

But the Iowa House has approved a bill changing the name of the Department of Elder Affairs.

If the legislation is signed by Gov. Chet Culver, the agency will be known as the Department of Aging - or DOA.

Representative David Heaton is one of those who isn't too happy with the vote.

He's offended by the acronym for an agency that helps elderly Iowans.

Heaton, a Republican, says: "I understand it. I don't like it."

But Representative Janet Petersen, a Democrat, says the name change was meant to comply with terminology used by the federal government.

She suggested not using an acronym.

The Senate has approved the change.

Culver hasn't taken sides, but now it's up to him whether the proposal lives - or is DOA.

That is the source of my question. Several states call it Department of Aging when I goggled it.

I am not asking about Iowa specifically, it just seems funny to me.

From the included story your poll should be Should the Department of Elder Affairs name be changed to Department of Aging. Since I don't live in Iowa I really don't care what they call it myself.

Like I said there is already a few states calling it Department of Aging when I googled. Namely Illinois, Maryland, Ohio, California and Pennsylvania.

I am not asking about IOWA specifically. However, the motion has been approved by the house representative and only awaits the governor's signature.

where's the option for who the F cares?

I live in Iowa and when this news story came on, I turned off the news.

Can you add a "Don't waste scarce tax revenues on needless government agencies like a Department of Aging" choice?
