Should CPU Voltage be set to Auto when testing overclock?

All,

When trying to establish maximum HTT, CPU, RAM, and HT in order to safely overclock a system, should you start out with CPU voltage set to ?Auto? in BIOS? Currently, mine is set to ?Auto? on an Asus a8n sli premium board and wondered if it was safe to leave this at this setting when testing all other components.

From what I understand, I will actually set the CPU voltage to the stock setting from ?Auto? when determining what the CPU can handle while slowly raising HTT. Is there any danger in leaving this to ?Auto?? I didn?t know if by leaving this to ?Auto? the board may try to exceed recommended voltage while I?m testing other components.

Board: Asus a8n sli premium
AMD FX-60
Zalman 9500HSF
Corsair 3500llpro 2GB

Thanks

I used to have the same board and if you change one thing, you have to change it all. For example, if you up the HTT, you have to put the multi to 13 even though that's what it's at when it's at auto.

Atybimf,

Thanks. So, if I just leave CPU Voltage as "Auto" while testing other parts, I don't have to worry about it increasing. Additionally, I would assume "Auto" is the default stock CPU voltage settings for whatever processor is in the board? Correct?

Thanks

Correct. But remember, you can only overclock on stock voltages to a point. Eventually you will need to raise the voltage to even boot into Windows and then maybe even more to be stable. Test stability by running two instances of Prime95 for at least 9 hours (I do 12 hours minimum myself). Dunno if you already knew that or know how to, just let me know.

Atybimf,

I'm been working a bit more with this board and it seems as though even when I change cpu voltage in BIOS from "Auto" to 1.35v or 1.4v the vcore displayed by Asus Probe 2.0 will always change from like 1.35v-1.39v or 1.4v-1.42. If I set it to 1.4v in BIOS, the highest vcore will increase to during dual Prime95 is 1.42v and when cpu voltage is set to "Auto" dual Prime95 will range from 1.36v-1.39v, but never higher than 1.39v.

Is this normal fluctuation with FX-60 or this board? I'm new to overclocking and just wondering if one sets cpu voltage to a specific number in BIOS does that mean it will NEVER increase or is there always a small change?

Thanks
