..they're already here. small portable jobies you can run on batteries for local area jam. takes very little to jam out a cell phone.

The question is not whether they exist (they do), but whether they should be legal (in the US, they are not).

Isn't it against FCC rules?

Currently, yes. The FCC does not like any device that is intentionally designed to interfere with any other (lawful) device. They have shown some signs of waivering on this one, but I doubt they will.

If I miss the call that my dad is dieing in the hospital while I'm at the theater because it's jammed you can bet your ass I'll be fucking somebody up.

I don't think the signals should be jammed or blocked, but kicking people out of restuarants/theaters/etc for annoying everyone by talking on the phone should be encouraged.

Ah that's funny. I thought they were legal. Our new high school is gonna be done next year and they threatened us with a cell phone jamming system if people continued to text in class. Nubs, lulz.

Tell them to go for it and they will be paying fcc fine for using it.

This is not 60's when restaurant would kick parents out because kids were crying. You kick those that are talking on cell phone, you might as well close down.

Some restaurants already do.

Hell yes! In schools it should be mandatory.

until someone pulls a gun in a classroom and a student tries dialing 911?

Beat me to it.

Just ban the use of mobile phones during class, and actually enforce it.

Problem solved.

I am sure that is getting them a lot of business as result.

Jails and prisons? Hell Yes. From the story:
"Last year, prison officials in California alone confiscated 2,800 cell phones."

That by itself should be enough to permit the use of jammers by such facilities.

As for restaurants and theaters...I'd LOVE to see those places enable jammers as well...just because so many ig-nant people insist on being ass-hats about their cell phone usage in those kinds of places...but it'll never happen, and (sigh) for very good reasons. Needing to make a GENUINE emergency phone call, such as a medical emergency, or even to receive such an emergency call will prevent jamming from happening in public places...BUT, (as was already mentioned) waiters and movie ushers should be issued cattle prods for use when some moron is blabbing away about the chick he met, the score of the big game, how her boyfriend dumped her, etc.
Save those kinds of calls for later...(don't hold your breath though...it's usually the same idiots who you see trying to text while they drive.

Restaurant and theater owners can install materials that create a Faraday shield. And I can step outside if I need to make a "emergency" call. Since I am not a doctor, fireman, or police. I can't think of many calls that I can't wait 90 minutes to receive.

.

Your wife just got into a terrible car wreck while you're at lunch and is trying to call you.

yes, but assholes may think it's OK...they may think talking to a friend about a game that just went on, or whatever gossip might be OK to them, but not you or me....there asshole levels differ.

Then quiet places need no talking on phone policies. If you are talking on a phone, a waiter (or someone) will come over and tell you to quit. Give it a few years and it would become part of our culture to not talk in quiet places.

Like that has really happened in movie theaters.

I've been to some movie theaters where they WILL throw you out for using a phone or talking. You might get a warning, depending how obnoxious you're being.

Imagine missing a call from your loved one who is having a heart attack because the business decided to be fascist and not allow signals to pass through their facility. It could happen. The arguments made in favor of jammers have all been invalid so far, and I ESPECIALLY don't want law-enforcement or military applications of it to exist. I can also foresee somebody stating "oh well, they should've called 911 instead". It's hard to do when you're not thinking straight due to a loss of bloodflow to the brain. Also, what about having to MAKE an emergency call from inside a jammed location? Fuck it, there is absolutely NO logical application of signal jamming, not on a service as necessary as cellular phone signals.

You want to throw me out, that is fine. Call the cops, when they come i will be more then welcome to walk out. In the mean time, i will loudly tell security guard/manager to take a hike. Enough that other people will be demanding refund.

I have been in movie theaters where they stop the movie and raise the lights for jerks like you so the cops, who are usually not very far away from the theaters BTW, can properly cuff you and read you your rights for disturbing the peace and trespassing, for starters.

The crowd usually gives a standing O to the cops and gets a free round of popcorn.

The asshat's date usually is pretty pleased to be marched out in front of everyone else as well, as I am sure you can imagine.

That would be false arrest and i would be making millions of dollars after everything is said and done. The only way it could be distrubinhg the peace is if i was screaming at the cops when they came. As for trespassing, i would have to refuse to leave when cops come.

The movie theater is private property. You do not have a right to be there. If they ask you stop using your phone and you say no, they will ask you to leave. If you don't leave, then you are trespassing.
