to own bombs, tanks, air craft carriers and other advanced weapons? Why are arms only guns? If i want an anti air craft missile to protect myself from the government shouldn't I be able to have it? We all know that guns are pretty much useless for protecting yourself nowadays, but a tank or a nuke, those are much more effective.

You can own a tank and bombs.

You can buy jets too.

You can have almost anything, you just have to go through the red tape.

Jets? Fine, some people are into old military aircraft.

Tanks? Fine, some people are into old military vehicles.

But no armaments for them.

Yep, that's true. There are restrictions on owning them though. You have to be trained to operate them. As for bombs, I'm pretty sure many states do allow you to purchase grenades. Probably requires training too though since explosives are more dangerous than firearms.

Negative.

You can by stripped down jets with no military arms and all weapons systems removed.

As I recall, the explanation is that when the Bill of Rights was drafted, there was a known difference between arms (carried weapons, i.e. pistols and rifles) and ordnance (cannons). Logically, revolvers, pistols, assault rifles, long rifles, and shotguns fit into the carried category; missiles, rockets, and bombs would be ordnance.

Yeah, I doubt you can buy an exact replica of the ones currently in service, i.e. with all the classified technology embedded.

I say a citizen should be able to buy everything short of a nuke.

any WMD goes beyond personal self preservation requirements.

edit: however if they must have a nuke, they will pay for it be safeguarded and regulated in the same way all existing nukes are safe guarded and regulated.

True, i need to get on the phone with morgan freeman.

You think one of the most powerful people in the country runs around at night beating up some of the worst criminals there are? And you want to attempt to blackmail him? Good luck with that.

Who said anything about "personal preservation requirement" ?

And I said SHORT of a nuke, meaning up to, but NOT including.

i think everyone should have the right to own a smoothbore musket, as is promised in the constitution.

unless of course you're an idiot who believes that the second ammendment was written by psychics who knew that weaponry would advance to the point of bombs capable of vaporizing large cities. then i guess you can interpret it as meaning you can own whatever the hell you want.

So what if I, as the super genius I am, were to build a hand held energy weapon (ray gun) with three settings: Stun, Kill, Obliterate City. Also, only I would be able to fire it, telepathically. No one else could use it.

Would it be legal for me to keep this creation of mine? Would the government allow it?

you obviously dont know the history and/or precedents to the 2nd ammendment.

Part of the logic is that a well armed citizenry negates the need for a standing army. Now how well would a people armed with muskets negate an Army?

Another major tenet of the 2nd ammendment is that the people shall reserve the right to overthrow thier own govt. Again, muskets arent really helping against todays army now are they?
