Should all monitors use drivers or does Plug and Play work fine?

I just purchased a Hitachi CM721fb. And I can't seem to get max refresh rates that the stats say it is supposed to , in games. Only in games , my desktop reads 85hz at 1280resz and in 1280 in a game (CounterStrike) I get only 60hz. ???? I seem to have had problems in the past when I try to use my monitor without the Device Manager recongnizing it. But when I would install the drivers it would read the brand name in Device Manager and things would be fine. Now both my monitors have been Sylvania , are other brands (sony, hitachi, viewsonic) designed to work without loading and drivers and just having the monitor displayed as "Plug and Play".

Also If I do need drivers of sometype for it where do I get them, Hitachi doesn't have anything.

I would install the supplied monitor drivers. You should be able to run your monitor at a higher frequency afterwards. Installing them can't hurt.

Every games runs default to 60hz (in win2k and XP only if I think..)

I just say "Default monitor" for my non Plug and Play workstation monitor. I can adjust the maxum resolution and refresh under the settings tab in Windows. Under Linux I just add the correct rates in by hand.

The monitor's .inf file tells the OS what kind of monitor it is (so it will display the right name in the device manager), and the resolutions and refresh rates it supports. You didn't say which OS you're using. XP should have the driver built in to the OS. Older MS OS's will probably need the driver. Actually ME does a decent job detecting and installing the right driver as long as the monitor wasn't produced after ME hit the market.

I have windows 2000, and it will not read the Hitachi name but Dougfrippon did help me out. The program link worked like a charm. I didn't know that your refresh rate affects your in game FPS. I was stuck on 60fps no matter how high I OC the card and after I installed that hz program and the refresh is at 85hz in game so Is my FPS. My neighbor has the same setup with a 18LCD and his is at 75hz and 75fps. Weird I did not know they were tied in together like that. Thanks everyone. Thanks Dougfrippon your link fixed my problem. I think that's an option for opengl...something like "sync every frame". I always turn that off.

Well Maggotry , where do I turn that "sync every fram" off at? If I can get better FPS without having to have higher refresh monitor rates I am all for it. SO where do I go???

Desktop > Right Click > Properties > Settings > Advanced > Select the tab that is your video card > Additional Properties > OpenGL Settings > Vertical Sync

I have a Viewsonic PF790 and I use the Plug and Play drivers. I tried loading the supplied drivers once just to see what I was missing and it totally screwed me over. Icons on my desktop wouldn't display correctly and my DVD software kept giving errors. I had to restore from a Ghost image to recover from it. I never worked up the courage to try it again

I turned it off and I went from 85fps constant in counter strike to the games fps limit of 100FPS. Thanks So it is a good idea to run it off I take it.
