supposdly his 98 toyota rav4 needs a new clutch. his mechanic that I think is a thief for various reasons. is charging him that.

does it sound reasonable? about $800 in labor?

He might be able to get a *somewhat* better deal somewhere else, but $1k isn't inconceivable. It's kind of a pain to change the clutch in FWD cars, and I can't imagine the pseudo-AWD present in the CRV helps any.

I just found out this same mechanic put in a new clutch about 3yrs ago. my 98 honda civic has never had it's clutch replaced.
isn't 3yrs too short?

Sounds like someone's been abusing their clutch...or there's some sort of mechanical problem.

I replaced the clutch on my car for the first time at 150k.

Shop around, he can probably beat that labor charge by $150-300. I'd use OEM parts though, don't skimp on that side of things.

A quote is meaningless without how many hours are quoted.

For my wife's Saturn it's a 7.8 hour job by the book. With a full clutch, PP, bearings and turning the flywheel I am looking at $800 when I need it done.
