I have a sword, but I wouldn't mind having a shotgun, too.
Do both. Cross them for best effect.

Try stabbing the wall, leaving the sword embedded, for an unconventional look.

I vote for swords, provided they're actually decent looking, historically based swords.

Anything can be used as a weapon, computer monitors, etc.

In fact, unless you use swords a lot or are very strong, they can be veerry heavy, and even an insane man would have trouble wielding one effectively. While a quick bash on the head with an LCD monitor would knock him out.

Plus, Shotguns are lighter and have a heavier buttstock, least the ones I've seen, so yeah, not a good argument in terms of safety.

Dull the blade?

Though I would do neither. A working shotgun+sword combo will do quite nicely in a zombie invasion.
