I'm going to be without my main phone for a short period (warranty return). I'm likely going to get a short term replacement phone.

Any suggestions what to get in the £40-£70 price range. My initial thoughts was to give windows phone on a cheap lumia a whirl.

That would be my recommend, at the super low end, Windows Phone is the smoother OS.

Android's been getting better, but Windows Phone has always done more with less.

The Lumia 635 is an excellent phone in that price range, especially as a short term or backup phone.

If you need specific apps or Google apps, look for a Moto E or any LG Optimus or BLU phone with at least 1GB RAM in that price range. It's usually the camera that suffers with low-end Android phones, whereas you get much better bang-for-your-buck with the Lumias.

For the price this is a really good choice. I got one for my son last Christmas as a kinda "starter phone" and I was really impressed with it.
The Win8.1 interface is clean and easy to use battery life is decent and the overall feel of the phone is good.
For sure it won't compare to some of the more expensive phones but for $40 I was surprised by it.
