Why do some people Live fast and die young?

While others have their self preservation instinct kick in and live a long time spent in a miserable way?

Probably live happy and die young. Death does not scare me, and time on Earth is short compared to eternity in the after life. May as well make this short time fun and not drag on, knowing that when it's over, even better things await. As a start, I should take up sky diving. That's actually on my bucket list... I need to seriously look into it.

Poll options don't correspond to poll question.

A short life doing what you like is absolutely preferable.

Fuck being miserable, for any length of time.

Long and miserable. At least ill have enough money to drive some nasty cars, considering I dont know if I will ever get the opportunity again. Im already off to a great start, ive hated my job since the first month here, and its been almost 3 years, and ive only had 1 suicide attempt in that timeframe!

Haha considering our economy is going the way of Japan I've noticed a huge uptick in modifying cars as a hobby. Funny that you mention that.

There's quite a difference between miserable vs. unfulfilling.

I'd rather live a long life with more thoughtfully constructed polls.

on ATOT, i think the majority of people are going to live extremely slow because they think they have to save every penny they make into retirement, and then when they retire at 50+ years old, they are going to be too slow themselves to actually do most of the things they envisioned doing with that money when they were younger.

"The survey found nearly 87 percent of the nation's lowest earners take comfort knowing they are far enough down the economic chain that their children and grandchildren won't possibly be able to live in circumstances any worse than their own, while 65 percent noted they have enough bills to worry about without the additional middle-class burden of making student loan payments or contributions toward a retirement plan that will probably go bust in the next market crash, anyway."

Cracks me up everytime.

A) Rate your expected remaining life span on a 1 to 10 scale.
B) Rate your expected remaining life pleasure on a 1 to 10 scale.

1) Multiply the two together, C = A*B.
2) Maximize the result, C, given the constraints of the problem.

In this case, we are constrained to B = 11 - A. Thus C = A * (11 - A). Take the deriviative: dC/dA= 11-2A. Set the derivative to zero to find the maximum. 0 = 11-2A. Thus A = 5.5 at the maximum.

My choice is thus neither. Given your constraint, I want a medium long life (5.5 on a 1 to 10 scale) at a medium level of happiness (5.5 on a 1 to 10 scale).

I was going for funny... but it came off as pretty mean 😉

I sure wouldn't trust my family with ANY math, lol.

I honestly have living will type of documents with that type of math in it. If my family has to choose between treatment options, because I am incapacitated, then I have requested that they use that math.

(A) Do major surgery that will leave me in immense pain in a hospital bed to last 3 months longer or (B) leave me alone to die in peace with a 1 month life span?

That type of math is written for them to decide. In option (A), I get (3 months) * (1 on a scale of 1 to 10 of life quality) = 3. In option (B), I get (1 month) * (7 on a scale of 1 to 10 of life quality) = 7. Thus, I have requested that they choose option B in that case.

I have given a list of life quality ratings for various scenarios, so they don't need to figure that out. They just need their best judgement for the length of life based off of doctor input.

My family is all engineers, scientists, and accountants. And the math is a simple multiplication for the 2 or 3 options that they will likely be presented. So, I think they can handle it.

I wanted to add in probability for success in the equation, but I knew that would be just too much for them to handle.
