shopping for new tires

wondering if anyone has any advice...

based on my tirerack.com searching, the Kumho Ecsta ASX seems like a nice affordable all-season tire.

i wanted to use this Costco deal that is out right now but apparently you have to buy Michelins to get the discount / free wiper blades... and michelins of this size seem quite expensive.

any advice is appreciated, thanks

ok......um..... maybe someone can weigh in on this question.....

my friend that owns a tire store says the Kumho is a nice tire but he is going to get me a quote based on something that will be more expensive now, but a cheaper "cost per mile" than the Kumhos......

i assume this means the tires he is suggesting have a longer lifespan?

He runs a Goodyear tire store so I'm assuming he is going to quote me on a set of Goodyears...

ok, here is his message to me:

if it was my car i would go with a little bit bigger size - p205/50R16 - that way you can get into a better all-season tire. it is just a little bit wider and it is rated for 105,000km. A much better tire than the Kumho and the Dunlop. It is called Goodyear Assurance and it would cost you 149 per tire - $678.68 tax included for 4 installed. $40 instant rebate on that after April 16th. This tire is a little bit more than the Kumho but your cost per mile would be a lot less. If you would like a price on a Kumho let me know, but this tire is better than the Kumho.

I had an 2002 ES, same tire size, I got the Kumhos off Tirerack for like $70/each, and they were pretty good. I'd save a couple hundred and get the Kumhos

I am running Nexen N2000 on my 02 Protégé5 and they seem to be ok. Shop told me they are no good in winter but since I have winter tires, I don't care.

I have Kumho SPTs on my mazda 3. I like them, but got a flat the other day and had to replace one. I got a sumotomo HTZ III (i think that is what it was). I like it as well, and they are pretty similar price wise.

Well, the more places I call, the more that my buddy's quote is sounding pretty good.

~170 per tire, installed incl taxes..... Goodyear Assurance.... They are 205/50/16s

Goodyear Assurance Tripletred or Comfortred? there's a price difference between the two.
For that price, I hope it's the former.

Speaking of the ASX I just picked up 4 over the weekend. I wanted quietness and comfort with good treadlife so that's why I went with them. Tread rating is 420 while many of the other tires were around 360 or less. Of course this is just a reference and actual treadlife will vary on how you drive and how you take care of them. Traction isn't going to be as good as a summer tire but that's the trade off when you want good ride comfort and low noise and all season performance. The Falkens I replaced sounded like I had super swampers on my car. Now my car rides like a lexus should.

I paid $136+tax for each but strangely if I bought them a week earlier it would have been $114 a tire. Somehow in a weeks time it went up $22 a tire.
