Just wondering if a "lite" 640kbps service would be sufficient or if I should stick to the standard "up to" 10mbps service.

Download won't matter too much. Whats the upload on there lite tier it might be a little too low. IMO I'd go for the 10Mbit as games like CS:S where there are mods, and sounds to dled the lite would be to slow.

upload/download speeds are advertised as 150/640kbps for the lite and 640kbps/10mbps for standard

If your really on a budget... then the 640kbps would be fine for gaming. Other than content coming down a little slow... once your playing, ping time is the only thing that is important. I've got the cheap DSL package from bellsouth and I play DOD:s all the time with no issues.

Like others have mentioned, your internet downloads might be a little slower but when you're talking about over all "speed" as advertised by telcom companies, they're talking about sustained downloads. When gaming online, you're really worried about latency which is your ping. Most DSL/cable speeds will work fine as long as they don't....suck? If you have problems gaming, just call them up and tell them your pings are too high
