I got the Sony DRU-500A... I mainly bought it because the price was right, but I tend to prefer -R better simply because my devices like that format better. Its tough to say at this point which format will win, but I would just look out for a good deal on one and then jump on it... I wish ya luck in finding one though Zim!

I have a Cendyne / Pioneer A05. Best compatibility and reliability record of any 4x DVD-R burner out there. Burns all 1x discs at 2x with a firmware update, including some discs that the Sony can't handle. 4x also not a problem with any media.

The A06 (dual format) is good, but if you're going to go the dual-format route I guess see if you can get a deal on the Sony DRU-500A because it is one hell of a drive.

I have a -r, but I would get a dual format if I had the chance... just to have the other option, I doubt I would use +r though. Take a look at the pioneer dvr-a06 its a pretty solid dual format dvd burner.

Personally I would wait a couple of more months (perhaps as long as January) before I buy a DVD burner. Because 8x burners should be out in september/october and they will only get better. If you can wait this long, surely another 3 to 5 months wont kill you.

So when are we supposed to to see the companies agree on a format? Are they using the public to decide where the demand lies? Usually these things are decided pretty quickly aren't they? It's already been a few years now and still no decision? I guess the safe thing is a dual burner. Can't go wrong.
