Which tools would you buy

  • Buy the $80 pink tools. I don't care what they look like as long as they work.

  • Buy the $100 black/grey tools. I can't let my friends at the beauty parlor see me using pink tools.

  • no opinion, show poll results

Assuming the craftmanship is the same (brand), I'd go with the pink ones. Who gives a fck, you saved 20% which equals more beer money. Who are you going to impress in your garage?

If I was rich, I'd go with the black ones though.

If I was basing decisions on $20, I'd quit my job at McDonald's and get a real job.

Wasting money is dumb no matter the amount.

If I can save 20% and there is no real impact then you'd have to be dim witted not to. The real question being asked is "would you consider the tools being pink to have significant impact".

Rationally I'd say get the pink every time, but honestly right at that moment in the store I'm not 100% sure I'd get the pink over the black. It is dumb but true.

there are times when I pay extra $$$ for idiotic features.

I probably could've gotten away with the $99 GPS, but I decided to spend $170 for FM traffic and lane assist where it shows a beautiful junction picture at highway junctions. Also it had bluetooth. This was in 2008 when I bought my Garmin 765T. I barely use it and I only use it for long distance trips where I know my damn way around already, but I just want the ETA to help cure my boredom while driving.

Another example is probably when I bought my H67 motherboard. I opted for something $15 more for displayport or whatever the Asus P8H67-M EVO gave me because it was the top of the line board, while I could've settled for the cheaper Pro/CSM model. Not like I'm ever using displayport on a NAS anyway.... Hah.

There are other times when I'm more realistic and can tell myself "screw it, just buy the cheap stuff" as long as it works the same.

I'm married with a child inside her so I have no one to impress.

I'd buy the pink ones, use the $20 towards dinner with wife and score later on, maybe even a BJ.

Win-win.

A toolset is pretty private. It's not like you'll be walking out in public with your pink tools hanging out for everyone to see. Hell, your friends may not even see them if you generally do garage work and the like alone.

Point being, it's not very public. So I'll offer an alternative scenario.

You're phone shopping and have found the phone with the best compromise between features, quality, and price. The phone is offered in some standard colors (blue, black, etc.) at $100. However, there is a pink version with girly flower decals running all over it. This version of the phone is on sale for $80. Would you still buy the cheaper version? And for arguments sake, there are no covers available for it that would change the color (but sure, you can paint it if you want).

I'd have a much harder time purchasing the pink phone. Tools are one thing (you could argue the girlyness of the color is countered by the manliness of the application) but the phone probably wouldn't be as socially acceptable.

I know the right answer is to get the pink phone, the color should be irrelevant, but I don't know if I could do it.

My youngest son & his school buddies are all into pink phones. These kids today, they don't even respect the proper color for their gender 🙁

I'm an ATOT'er

none of the above; my social anxiety would have prevented me from going into the store in the first place, and I would have bought the tools online -- after reading 50 reviews, posting a thread in ATOT asking for recommendations, and finding a coupon on fatwallet.

If it's the same fucking set then you'd be a woman for going more expensive for the same thing because it has a different and better fitting colour for you.

Personally, even when i have money to throw around, i'll never pay more than i need to do out of general principle so i'd go with the pink set, i'd color mark it at home anyway, i always do.

I'm not sure any of the scenarios match my specific circumstances. I wouldn't care much about a phone either; only slightly more than the tool set. I don't spend a lot of time studying my phone.

I put value on aesthetic appeal when it matters. Absolute pragmatism would say the 50¢ pink sun dress from the thrift shop is the way to go for summer clothes, but I couldn't wear a pink sun dress because I hate pink, and a sun dress is a little too girly.

This question is more of a sliding scale, than a binary choice imo.

Which proves you completely missed the point, would you color coordinate with the tools or just buy the pink ones?

Not really sure if you're serious, or not. Why the fuck would anyone color coordinate tools? Tools serve 2 purposes only, to create, and destroy. Anything that doesn't aid in those functions doesn't matter.

Think about the question posed in the OP, this was his intention, would you color coordinate with the rest of your tools and your toolbelts/pants or would you go with the cheaper ones.

It's not MY point, so don't blame me for not getting it.

If you read my response to the question above, i agree with you.

best answer!

Nah, buy silver/black ones for her too, there is only one brand worth spending money on.
the pink ones are likely the same as the black/gray ones except they are pink for breast cancer awareness.
so many products have thrown out a pink version for this reason.
they even have NFL players wearing pink cleats, pink jerseys, pink gloves, etc. to raise awareness.
