Shopping at the local mall ...

I hate shopping but (to please the wife) I went anyway this morning to our local mall. It's a smaller, community mall with perhaps 75 to 100 stores. As I stated previously I HATE shopping so I haven't gone there in like 6 months. Boy, was it depressing ...

- About 1/3 stores that were there 6 months ago are closed up.

- Even with massive markdowns there are few shoppers buying.

- The foot traffic in the mall was "light" (and that was being kind.

I guess if you haven't been hit by this recession all you have to do is visit your local mall ...

Our local mall down the street is about the same size, Mervyns is clsoed down and that was one of the biggest buildings in the mall, You drive by 500 feet away and the street and you can see the big ass boards on the windows and CLOSED signs, buncha new shops inside are also closed, hell, Main street is kinda depressing, it once hada lot of traffic and peeps walking around and eating. I drive down it once a week or so and see 3-4 once healthy stores now closed and no one at the restaurants that once had people all day.

one of our local malls went this way, the next closest one has a ton of new shops going up around it and it is really busy

malls have not been hit by the recession as much as they have been hit by Amazon.com, eBay, Craigslist, the internet in general, Wal-mart, and target.

Why go to the mall and deal with all the headaches of giggly, obnoxious teenagers, and screaming babies when I can peruse the internet at my leisure from home or work, get what I want without all the bullshit.

The mall is a great place to go....when your 12-15 or if your 60-70 and like to mall-walk before the kids get there, other than that, it's a waste.

Agreed but unfortunately for the malls the demographics you chose to identify (12 to 15 and 60 to 70 year olds) do NOT spend a lot of money. Either they do not have any money to spend ... or they have the money but don't need or want anything sold at the mall.

Our local mall is morphing into an "upscale shopping destination". They've added a bunch of stores (Nordstroms, Burberry, Lacoste, True Religion, Juicy Couture, Kate Spade, Louis Vuitton, Coach, Johnston & Murphy, LL Bean) in the last year. They hope to draw people from up to 3 hours away.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I never go to the mall. WAY too many teenagers there and my wife says she can't keep me from staring at the girls that are so scantily clad they might as well be on the Vegas strip trolling for Johns

The mall in my hometown is on its way out. Two of the three big retail stores have closed or are closing in the future (Mervyns and Gottschalks) smaller stores are closing all the time and I heard the movie theater inside the mall will probably be closing soon. Its pretty sad too town of about 50k people its the only real shopping center for about 35miles aside from the walmart/target.

where the hell is this? here in vancouver i can barely find parking at metrotown or oakridge on weekends.

Youd think malls in Sacramento would be empty, but they're always packed and the Cheesecake Factory always has 2 hour waits.
