I would advise against these. Ya Rob you only had 2 bad out of 50 but, how long are they going to last in the long run. Go for it if you dont care about your backups or plan on reburning them in a year.
Pushing? nah, they work great for me and I wouldn't pay more for something that isn't any more reliable.
BTW, I love these media and would buy 1,000 if I'd had money to burn!

Actually the irony is that I do pay for my games unlike some people, however, my ps2 likes to eat up my discs so that I end up with nothing for my investment (my ffx disc will testify to that).
Personally I think it's very stupid to use the originals, especially with movies and games you really like. I'm not as fanatic as some collectors who never open the stuff they buy, but I do want my stuff to stay in mint condition.

And there is no irony in any case, good equipment = awesome experience that cheap equipment cannot give you. There is a small irony that I tried these cheap discs, but since that ARE just backups, I'll jsut make another one :) (actually, I've never had problems with other cheap discs before, like the matrix and leda ones on shop4tech, and they don't cost that much more..)

I had trouble with Sonic disks. Since then, I've bought nothing but brand name stuff on sale.

YOu see, you see it's just compatibility problems with some hardware not the media itself.
Some is pre-programmed to burn at 2x,4x,6x and even 8x.
Wait till I try this thing at 12x and 16x, I think it will work good too since I burned fine at 8x on my defective liteon 812s :D it is now at newegg for a new replacement LOL and I paid only 5.40 bucks to ship it back.
Don't forget to leave them a positive at pricewatch.com, they sure deserve one for having such a high quality media.

the real question is.. 6 months down the road, are your discs still going be good? My old roommates CMC's started corrupting a month and a half after he burned em... yes, i know, it's CMC, but just pointing out a possibility

lnguyen, ugh, that's bad. Were they branded or unbranded? Now I'm worried about ever purchasing CMC-made TDKs or K-Hypermedia DVD media. Btw, I've seen that happen to K-H CD-Rs (CMC) too. "Faded out" after less than a year. Very disturbing, for media that was said to "last 70 to 100 years". Heck, audio cassette tapes from the 80s last longer...

PS. How bad are Princos, for longevity? (I already know that they are fairly poor in the quality dept.)

Has anyone here used BeAll DVD-R's? I noticed Meritline sells them and the way they tout those things you'd think they are better than Riteks. They have some kind of super satisfaction guarantee, too. I've never tried them because I never heard of them or heard of anyone using them, plus last time I bought something based on the claims of a website I wasn't overjoyed. I bought a 100 spindle of black-bottomed CD-R's on eBay that were supposed to be of super-high quality but they were only roughly as good or maybe even slightly worse than the other black-bottomed CD-R's I had been using (TDK).

I've burned 200+ of these Sonics with only one defective disc -- and as mentioned, you know when it is defective because the burn fails. (I suspect a hiccup in my hard drive access more than the blank.)

For those having settop problems, sometimes a cheap player, like an Apex, will play the most successfully. I'm using a Pioneer settop that costs ~$80 that is also quite compatible.

For really important data, I burn two DVD's, and I use different cheap brands. To me, that is safer than having one Ritek (or similar) disc -- and these discs are, after all, half the price of Ritek.

Ritek is good stuff, however, and if you burn for friends, you can be assured it is the most compatible brand around.

I'm not sure if they were unbranded or not.

But on a side note, shop4tech DOES have ritek G04's for ~$26/50 pack... that seems really cheap.. newegg has two ritek/ridata... not sure which ones are the G04's tho.

No, you don't know when a disk is defective just by a failed burn. It may burn fine, but unless you have nero "verify" the data or suface scan the disk, there can be loads of errors that cause movies to skip.

"Hiccup in my hard drive"? Doesn't your burner have any buffer underrun protection?

People that are too dumb to have a computer unfortunately have dvd burners too.

I've burned about 75 out of the 100 of these disks I bought with about 5-8 bad disks. These are definately inferior to Riteks.

I tried out a 50 pack for 12.61. I burned my first movie at 4X on my NEC 1300 and then ran DVDInfo Pro to check for errors. It ran for nearly 30 minutes and had over 2000 errors and I finally stopped it at 95%. DVD seems to play all right though.

This stuff seems to be on par with some 4X GQ's I tried from Fry's this last weekend. I also had over 2000 errors when I burned these Fry's disks at 4X. When I burned them 2X I had zero errors.
Both Sonic 1X-2X (MUST001 media code) and GQ 1X-4X (LeadDataA01 media code) are considered 3rd tier media according to Digitalfaq.com

I am not knocking the deal because these are the disks are perfect to give to someone else and they only cost a quarter each. I will probably buy some more to have on hand for other people.
My DVD-R Maxell's which are TY's and my TDK-R's which are TTG01 are 4X rated which I burn at 8X with zero errors. These are cond\sidered 1st tier media according to the above link. The TDK-Rs are on sale for 50 disks for 24.99 at Costco warehouses until 8-1-04 in a buy one get one free promotion.

Update:
I just burned a Sonic at 4X on my NEC 2500 with the newest firmware and then I ran DVDInfo Pro and I had zero errors. They seem to be better when burned on the 2500 than the 1300. Both have the newest firmware flashing. I don't have the option of burning at 8X on the NEC 2500.

LOL, I think your DVD player is crap. Riteks work on everything I've tried and I've never had a coaster with them. There is a reason the Riteks get 5 star reviews on every site they are sold on...so just because they don't work on one of your DVD players does not mean that they are crap.

These media if last more then 6 months or less then a year is still pretty good already. Beside who go back to watch their own crap after a month???
Most people use liteon or some other cheap crap burner that doesn't like generic media.
So don't judge a media because it doesn't work for your type of burner you have, buy another that is compatible. The money you saved on media will more then pays for itself later.
I believe these brand of burner works good for generic media: Artec, Optorite, Sony, Teac, NU, NEC, Phillips, maybe a few others I haven't test it myself.

For backups, I had only 1 bad out of 100 so far which is at the end of the track and i have to say it just not bad considering that my cd-r are even less reliable and it's expensive brandname too called imation/memorex/digital research.
