(Reuters) - Payment card data was stolen from an unknown number of Target Corp customers starting on the busy Black Friday weekend in a major breach at the U.S. retailer, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The Secret Service is investigating, according to a spokesman for the agency, which safeguards the nation's payment systems. Target officials did not respond to requests for comment.
Investigators believe the data was obtained via software installed on machines that customers use to swipe magnetic strips on their cards when paying for merchandise at Target stores, according to the person who was not authorized to discuss the matter and declined to provide further details.
Krebs on Security, a closely watched security industry blog that broke the news, said the breach involved nearly all of Target's 1,797 stores in the United States, citing sources at two credit card issuers. The report said that "track data" from at least 1 million payment cards was thought to have been stolen before Target uncovered the operation, but that the number could be significantly higher.
"When all is said and done, this one will put its mark up there with some of the largest retail breaches to date," the report cited an unnamed source as saying.
The biggest credit card breach at a U.S. retailer reported to date was an attack against TJX Cos, the parent of TJ Maxx and Marshalls. The company disclosed in March 2007 that data from 45.7 million payment cards had been stolen by hackers over 18 months. Banks later asserted in court documents the hackers could have obtained more than 94 million account numbers.
The data breach at Target could have extended from just after Thanksgiving to December 15, Krebs said, citing evidence from investigators.
It is not yet clear how the attackers were able to compromise point-of-sales terminals at so many Target stores across the country. Doing so would have required careful planning by sophisticated cyber criminals.
An American Express spokeswoman said the company is aware of the incident and is putting fraud controls in place.
Representatives for Visa and MasterCard declined to comment.
There are no indications that the theft affected shoppers on Target's website, Krebs reported.

Better keep an eye on your credit reports and credit card charges...

Almost every store? I'm VERY interested to hear the the findings. Inside job maybe, and extremely coordinated setup and execution.

I always hear about credit card information being stolen, but I never hear about any massive illegal charges or purchases coming from it.

Keep your ears open more. I had a card compromised about 6 months ago. Attempted purchases were happening in states all over the country on the same day.

My "Internet" account was compromised. I only keep about $20 in there at a time, or move money over when I need it for online purchases. The people who stole the # were trying to buy hotel rooms and gifts for >$50....all purchases were declined :) fuckers.

If you make big purchases you get caught. I watched a documentary about how they get your Info and use it to buy something small like an iPod on your dime and then sell the unopened item on ebay or craigslist. If you purchase big ticket items over and over you will definitely get caught.

^ one time someone used my dad's cc to gas up a boat at a marina and it was over $500. The lesson here is... don't buy a boat.

Glad we use the Target card when shopping at Target.

Actually, that's not a bad argument for using a reloadable gift card. However, all credit cards have fraud protection, so really it's just an argument against ever using a debit card.

Ugg, say I used my debit card within those dates. Should I call the bank and cancel my card and get a new one? Just watch it closely?

Someone got one of my CC numbers a couple of weeks ago and tried to charge $113 at McDonalds.

I work at a bank and as a result of (we believe) this compromise we've had definite spike in fraudulent charges over the last ~week or so. As a precautionary measure we will probably be closing 400-500 cards and are currently blocking card-based transactions altogether in a number of foreign countries and a few states as well.

Maybe these companies should invest in hiring some security personnel and buy hardware like firewalls and IPS systems and develop something to prevent this.

My girl's card got hacked, and I would imagine this was the culprit. Sucks, but what an amazing hack.
