(CNN) -- Police took a man into custody Monday after "multiple people" were shot near Texas A&M University, a police official said.

Several law enforcement officers were among the people shot, Rhonda Seaton of the College Station Police Department told CNN. She didn't have information on how many people were shot or their conditions.

She said a person identified as the gunman was in custody. The shooting happened about one block from campus, Seaton said.

Officer Jon Agnew with the Bryan Police Department said at least one civilian had been injured. Bryan is adjacent to College Station.

Police are still at the scene making "sure there aren't multiple suspects," Officer Jason James of the Bryan Police Department said.
James said the first call was that an officer was down and shots had been fired.

seems the constables were serving eviction papers on someone who started shooting. i've read reports one constable is dead, another wounded, along with a neighbor.

Campus police at Texas A&M University said the shooting had occurred entirely off-campus and directed questions to the local police. Fall classes at the university are scheduled to begin on Aug. 27.

Of course the story sounds more sensational if you mention the Texas A&M campus even though it occurred a few blocks away....

Now the shooter has more to worry about besides being evicted.

Are these events happening with more frequency? or are these type of things normal and they're just getting more coverage?

More coverage. How many shootings happen a night in Chicago? This one sounds like a great example of sensationalism. The media included Texas A&M and we assume a student killed a bunch of students. It sounds like an eviction gone bad.

News reporting three dead, to include the shooter. One dead is a policeman. he third is only identified as a man.

This was off campus and no news about any students involved.

An army medic said that it appeared to him like an automatic rifle was used.

And you guys talk about how such weapons aren't used in crimes...

This is the problem with assault rifles.

To own a real assault rifle the person has to go through a background check and pay a special tax to the government.

Chances are, the people reporting the news do not know the difference between an assault rifle and a semi-auto rifle.

But then again, criminals do not care about laws.

Witnesses said they thought it was an automatic rifle of some sort. Witnesses that had served in the Armed Forces so they probably know what they're talking about.

So you have no idea and are just shooting your partisan crap out our butt. Thanks for letting us know. BTW, quote these witnessess.

People recognize deadly weapons.

At least the dead are texans who probably support that man's right to bear arms that kill peace officers.
