On Sunday, liberal activist Jesse Jackson repeated his claim that semi-automatic weapons can shoot down airplanes and said they could also "blow up railroads."

“Semi-automatic weapons are not just about gun control, they’re about national security,” he said while appearing on Fox News.

“You know that these weapons can shoot down airplanes, they can blow up railroads. This is really a whole national security issue,” he added.

Jackson said he was okay with having a gun for the house, or a gun for hunting.

“But these semi-automatic, military-style assault weapons -- they shot at the White House two years ago, so none of us are safe,” he added.

Last month, Jackson made a similar claim.

"The young man who did the killing in Aurora, Colorado, with the arsenal he had– he was right near the airport, right near the runways [in] Denver. He could shoot down airplanes, so this is a matter of homeland security as well," he said.

I was thinking, any gun should be able to if you know where to aim, but a quick google search at typical ranges of guns like a sniper arn't as far as I thought. You could maybe take down a plane that is taking off or landing but probably not at cruising altitude, especially if it's one of those huge jumbo jets, the ones that form a small white line in the sky and barely make any sound, those are like at 33k feet up I think. Distance aside I'm sure even a 22 could take down a plane, you just need to know where to hit.

As for trains, why would you want to go through the trouble of derailing a train, the oil companies are doing a good enough job at doing it themselves.

Take your assault rifle down to the railroad tracks and wait for a train. As the train gets really close, um, stick the barrel in the switch and pull, detrailing the train. The derailed train leaves the tracks slamming into the school and coming to rest with the propane tank car directly over the burners in the school kitchen, causing the propane car to explode and kill all the children. The sound of the explosion startles the giraffes who lift their heads into the propellor of the plane that is taking off causing it to crash into the hospital killing everybody.

Way to go gun nuts.

None - I'm just playing up to the fantasy that home invasions happen at a rate of 100 per 3 seconds. And, there are roaming gangs of teens going from house to house, kicking down door, beating up/raping people and taking all their valuables.

While they DO indeed happen (home invasions), they are not as frequent as alarmist make them out to be.

In his defense, you could probably take out a plane with an assault rifle if you hit it in the right spots. As far as railroads, well I can't think of a real scenario where that would happen. Perhaps, if you shot a suicide bomber as he was crossing the tracks, it could blow up a railroad.
