Shooting Birds From The Balcony

JoeKing

Lifer
Soooo with no work today and I noticing the large amount of birds hanging out outside. I started shooting

Excuse the cruddy camera results

<-----really truly wishes he had a D90 right about now 🙁

Some modern dinosaurs

I thought shooting would be, well, shooting. I feel let down.

Swap that D90 for a P90, and then we're talking shooting

I looked at the pics and thought, "These don't look very dead..."

I admit, the thread title sucked me in.

I remember shooting some birds w/ a BB gun when I was really young, something I still regret.

We take pot shots at geese flying over all the time. We don't have any fancy d90's so we have to use good ol 870's.

Are you allowed to shoot geese for food? 😀

Nah you don't need a particular camera to shoot better pictures - It looks like the snow was metered as grey - to combat this - meter off the snow and shoot to overexpose by about 2/3 stop. Your snow would be white, and the bird - properly exposed. Your sky - well I'm thinking this is from a point and shoot based on the super telephoto unclarity - exif data was stripped.

I'm working with a Canon Powershot A570 IS here. I don't think I can white balance manually on this, although I could be wrong. That and I've only got a 4x max optical. The pics you see is the result of going digital zoom. And some heavy filters and auto balancing in photochop.

Thanks for the info though. I might step outside and mess with the camera some more. (it's the wifes camera btw, still saving for my SLR)

White balance can be auto - its just that your snow is dark - its because the camera is trying to meter that as a midtone grey - If you can - set to aperture or shutter priority mode - then half press the shutter while pointed at the snow. Now take the numbers you get in the camera (i.e. f/7.1 shutter speed 1/500) - and go 2/3 stop up. SOme folks say 1-2 stops. So to go one stop up - easiest to increase shutter speed to 1/250 leaving aperture the same. That'll give you white snow and a better subject, but your background will be shot to hell.

As opposed to inside? I understand the concerns of shooting into the air, but shotgun pellets aren't going to do much.

In case you didn't know, op is currently jobless. Geese have plenty of meat and is quite tasty 🙂

as to pellets, I figure he lives in a wooded area.

Yep, we are allowed to shoot them. But geese have really thick feathers, so they have to be pretty close to actually do any damage. Its more of a way to blow off steam.

Shotgun pellets won't do any harm by the time they come down. The only thing that is out that way is a huge field anyways. Might take out one of the stupid turkeys but nothing to worry about really.
