I'm told of .45s blowing a man's heart out through his back (albeit in a sort of heart-flavored slurry) at short range. Why is this necessary?

Do you want to stop people with one shot, semi-regardless of where you hit them (at least in the torso)? 😉

A 9mm round in the shoulder for instance, may not prevent your intended target from finishing you off...

At least, that's how I understand it. Plus big calibre guns are cool.

This would come in handy if you were being swarmed by zombies coming at you in a straight line (assuming you could fire it straight)...or if your daughter's boyfriend came over to the house for the first time..
 
Heh. Reminds me of the time I fired a .50 BFR cept it didn't go flying out of my hands but I did have extreme anxiety on my second shot after the first shock.

That's why my glock has 17 rounds in it,well 20 once I get my mag extenders ...😀


And you be lucky to hit anything with that unbalanced looking hand cannon....😕
