You got screwed.

And said agreement specifies that you are required to stop using it when you are no longer a student. ;) I got in on the same thing when I was working for a university.

1. $35 for an employee discount price is not unreasonable.
2. Who said Microsoft was not making enough money?
3. Most users do just fine with XP Home, which is 2/3 the cost of XP Professional.

Sorry but XP Home is nothing more than the software equivalent of the 486SX chip. It is the exact same OS dumbed down. I'll pay the other 1/3 and get the whole OS. I do think that MS is short sighted in not being willing to price some deals for the home/enthusiast market, something along the lines of a 4 machine pool license. In the end though it is their product and they can decide how to sell it and what to charge.

You're kidding, right?

The only thing you could possibly complain about is remote desktop.
XP Home is just as good as Pro lacking a few minor MS improvements that third parties software can fulfill if need it.

Windows XP Comparison Guide

IMHO, most users can get by with any flavor of *NIX that can be had for free or for a nominal fee.

You can't handle permissions in a decent way easily in home.

But there is no SMP Support in Home Edition for Dual Opterons or Dual Core X2's!

But the point was that most users would be fine with XP Home, the vast majority of people aren't going to use permissions or require SMP support. Sure, many of the people on AT do, but they are generally more power users than the average person who just wants to surf and email.
