... i cant catch a break with my new pc...
yesterday i was walking around the house getting shocked by everything... I later walked up to my pc and touched the metal part of the case... the computer was on at the time. When i touched i got shocked (by static electricity) and the pc turned itself off. Now no matter what i do i can not get it to turn on.
I tried:
unplugging/ plugging back in
turning off/on the power supply
unplugging the PS from the MB.

The PC will not budge i dont hear any sounds when i turn it on, no fans.. there is nothing.
Is there some kind of a reset button or a fuse in the power supply?

This can be one of 3 things.. power supply, MB, CPU. How do i narrow down which one it is? I am going to get a new power supply and try it out today.. any other suggestions?

MB and CPU should be ok, and would not cause this problem.

Likely it's your PS.

Check for a reset switch somewhere....most have self-resetting relays. It's kinda odd that your computer shutdown after you got a shock. Is your computer-box properly grounded? Is the outlet it's plugged into properly grounded?

Anyhow, unless you fried the PS switch on your computer case, or the paths on the MB to the switch, it should be the PS you should be looking at.

Good luck!

This might sound dumb, but try unplugging the power cord from the power supply for at least a few hours. Give everything a chance to discharge and reset, then plug things back in and see what happens. My guess is the motherboard got zapped, but if you're lucky you can just reset things or end up having to replace the PS......

It ended up being the power supply. Once i replaced it, everything worked fine...
I am still not quiet sure how its possible to burn out a power supply with static electricity.. I thought these things are grounded through the power cord.
anyways.. thanks for the help guys... its smooth sailing from here... (knock on wood)

Anything is possible, dude. It might not even have anything to do with the shock that you gave to the case, may just be a random coincidence. Although, now you know that all that talk about ESD is for real. ;)

Now that you have replaced the PS, open up the old one and you will find a small glass tube type fuse in there. Check it to see if it is blown.

BTW . . . on those dry days when everything shocks you, try walking around bare footed, or at least in your socking feet. This will help keep you nuturalized and thus less shocking <G>.
