We were told over and over that Romney was a smart, successful business man, and that his great experience in the world of business would mean he could get the country going on the right track. In fact, it was the ONLY positive reason given to vote for the man -- everything else was some variation on "Obama sucks".

And those of us who saw through Romney pointed out that what he did was NOT building businesses, NOT the sort of experience the country needs -- it was just exploiting opportunities to make money at any cost. That he was a phony and not to be trusted.

Now it turns out that he couldn't even run his own campaign. And they're saying he was "scammed by consultants".

And the right is whining that they were fooled by Romney. Which is entirely because they deluded themselves into not seeing what was right in front of their own faces.

I can only be grateful that they were narrowly unsuccessful in conning everyone else into putting this man into the White House.

I agree with you. The REAL Mitt Romney (the one who was governer of Mass. all those years) didn't show up for the election. The GOP has been telling their donors one thing and their voters another, hence the reason behind all of Romney's flip-flopping.

As a long time registered Republican small business owner who voted for Obama a second time and a straight-Democrat ticket (not counting propositions) for the first time ever because the party has collectively jumped that deep into the batshit. If the Republican party is ever going to be viable again, changes need to be made. My comments are as follows:

0. Remember that Republican priorities are advancing their policies, not stopping the Democrats policies. Have your own ideas. As proven a few days ago, the Republicans lost big because of their strategy to pound away at Obama's so-called "failed policies" without introducing any policies of their own. Mitt Romney was the personification of this, as his plan to solve the deficit had absolutely zero substance to it, so much so that even the math behind it was disproven.

1. Embrace populism like the Democrats. It need not be the Democratic brand of populism, the GOP needs to find a way to shed its image as the party of the haves where the Democrats are the party of the have-nots. Instead, the Republicans need to maintain that we're all in this together, and the little bit of pain everyone bears now will pay dividends later. This will be particularly difficult as the GOP has done an excellent job of conditioning its party faithful to believe that populism is the same as socialism.

2. Reform the U.S. Senate filibuster rules. Put a time limit on blocking a vote, or allow a simple majority to end it, etc. Something that makes the majority party in the Senate responsible. Make Harry Reid be the problem, not Mitch McConnell.

3. Work with congress and the president to stimulate the economy now by reducing taxes on those who spend nearly all their money (that is, the poor and lower middle classes). There's a surplus of capital right now (note the record low costs for borrowing) so reducing taxes on the investment classes does little good. Our economy depends on consumer spending - let them spend.

4. Work with congress and the president to stimulate the economy later by starting infrastructure projects we've been putting off for decades. Capital costs are at an all time low - let's invest in our own networks. Labor costs are also very low. Our economy depends on the efficient movement of people and goods. Let's make it easier. Don't forget the power grids.

5. Plan budgets that start reducing the debt within five years and pay off the debt in fifteen. Republicans are the party of fiscal responsibility, NOT ANTI-TAXES. This will be painful for everyone, so take the lead by matching budget cuts with tax increases (dollar for dollar). This lets Republicans choose the taxes to increase, instead of Democrats choosing. Quickly move the argument to what to cut instead of who to tax. Send Grover Norquist packing. The tax pledge that he coerced most Republicans into signing has completely hamstrung them. They are absolutely incapable of compromise on the economy, even when they want to compromise.

6. Get the federal government out of the social issues - gay marriage, abortion, drug enforcement, immigration, gun control. Republicans are the small government party; time to prove it. Move those politics to the state level and open up the national party to more diverse positions. These worked as polarizing issues to fire up the base in 1994. Last election has proven that an increasing majority of Americans simply don't care what others do with their own genitals.

7. Stop demonizing education. Educated voters will work a lot harder for your cause than non-educated ones, which was key in Obama's election and re-election.

8. Stop griping about Obamacare. It's a market solution to the problem. Healthcare has always been regulated and always will be.

9. Republicans are going to permanently lose a large part of the electorate. The Democratic Party dumped them when they approved civil rights. Now its the Republicans turn. They couldn't win with them this time and they won't be able to win with them in the future (they're going to be less in the future). They need to dump them now; the sooner they do, the sooner they can reclaim the center. What you'll lose in Deep South baptist rednecks you'll more than make up for with the Hispanic vote. When the social issues are no longer national issues, their fiscal responsibility position will appeal to a large swath of the center.

The people of moderate Republican beliefs are basically in control of the country. After the Reagan and Bush I presidencies the Democrats decided to adapt rather than die and turned very hard towards the middle to take a large chunk of the non moonbat vote. Don't be hung up on names the moderate Republicans have basically taken over the Democratic party. This is why I and MANY other long time Republicans have been voting Democratic more and more lately. And it's exactly where the Republicans need to go back to if they want to be winning national elections ten years from now.

I am glad we didn't get conned. I mean just think, we could have had a guy con us into believing he would cut the deficit in half, keep unemployment under 8% and it would be at 5% at the end of his first term, then he would close Gitmo, end earmarks, wouldn’t hire lobbyists, work with the right, become the most transparent administration in history, and on and on. Whew, that was a close one.

And there you have it. Apparently there is no desire to stop attacking and start advancing new ideas, probably because they don't want to be attacked for them.

It's incredible to see a strategy that fails on the schoolyard be employed so forcefully by nearly half of the nation.

You asked me in another thread why I called you a hack. This is why. You are incapable of intelligent thought or even addressing the topic of a thread. All you do is spout talking points cribbed from FNC and talk radio.

Which we can thank the far right Republicans, Not-in-my backyarders, anti-gay, anti-choice, anti-evolution, anti-education, anti-voter fifth column people like Matt. Did I forget to mention the the NO SECOND TERM at any COST people? Well ya, just glad I got it in here!

Truth hurts don’t it. Obama pulled the wool over everyone’s eyes promising everything under the sun (get into office at all costs) and then gets a free pass. It's better to explain why you can't deliver on your promises from the Presidential Podium. If you want to give Fox News credit for being the only ones bringing this to light then so be it. You’re the hack for not accepting the truth.

Which is proof you don't have a clue about me. I am pro gay marriage unlike many Republicans and Obama until this year. I am pro-choice and believe in evolution. If you ever see me post anything otherwise you are more than welcome to point it out. Unlike most of the people on this forum I don’t need to break out my party handbook to see where I stand on an issue.

Romney wasn't really much of a business man anyways. He was really more of a con artist himself. All he did was just take over companies, destroy them, and then hide his money in overseas accounts. He probably participated in the swiss bank amnesty program.

He's just a horrible businessman. Remember that he's been unemployed for quite a while, too. It's pretty shocking that so many Americans voted for an unemployed guy to be President, but then you remember that they did it because they're probably racist people who wanted free stuff.

You are an idiot. The guy is worth over $250 Million. Here are some of Bain success stories: AMC Entertainment, Aspen Education Group, Brookstone, Burger King, Burlington Coat Factory, Clear Channel Communications, Domino's Pizza, DoubleClick, Dunkin' Donuts, D&M Holdings, Guitar Center, Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), Sealy, The Sports Authority, Staples, Toys "R" Us, Warner Music Group and The Weather Channel.

That's the problem when you just make shit up as you go along, a lot of the time you are wrong.

Truth hurts don’t it.

Sometimes. But I never have to worry about that when I read anything from you.

You’re the hack for not accepting the truth.

What truth? That Obama didn't do everything he promised? That he lied about some stuff?

I've accepted that and admitted both openly on this forum.

But that's not what this thread is about. It's related to a story about Romney's incompetence, which is on RedState.com, a very right-leaning site.

You don't have the basic honesty required for self-introspection, though. You didn't want to discuss the topic. So instead, you tried to change the subject -- first by regurgitating a Romney stump speech, and now talking about Obama.

This is what hacks do. They defend their "side" above all else and refuse to acknowledge anything that makes their "side" look bad. And that's you, to a tee.

I try to discuss what you think is a worthy topic but I just can't seem to get onboard with the outrage. Romney doesn't even really matter anymore. He lost the election, doesn't hold any public office, and won't have any effect on politics other than an occasional TV appearance. And you clearly haven’t been comprehending my posts if you think I don’t criticize my own side.

There's no outrage. It's an observation about a man who ran for president -- and nearly won -- on the basis of his great business experience, whom it turns out couldn't even run his own campaign.

Romney doesn't even really matter anymore.

Then why do you bend over backwards defending him?

And you clearly haven’t been comprehending my posts if you think I don’t criticize my own side.

You may do it once in a while, but it's a token gesture when you respond to a thread like this with a Romney stump speech.

Its not like Mitt Romney was a extremist right wing candidate or a bad candidate. He learned how to play one on television. As the '47%' tape showed, he did a damned good job of playing one when he didn't think he was on TV. The 47% thing though, that's just old school classism. Sadly I know a few fairly Democrat leaning voting folks that share similar views, it's just that they take a more paternalistic attitude to those they culturally disdain.

The Republicans wont be getting the shift in their brand so long as the GOP frames its arguments in terms of "party purity" and immutable principles that cannot be modified at an atom's worth. People need to believe you have their best interests in mind - amazing concept heh. If you do that, I think people understand sometimes that means that everyone can't have everything, and that something has to give (compromise). They won't buy it from someone who seems to want to deport their grandmothers.

We don't need two Democratic parties, so the GOP need not morph into one. I think sane people from both parties recognize that there is a beneficial tension that can exist, where real ideas can be debated, and that there is something fundamentally valid in both parties perspectives. But so long as one party can effectively demonize the other, there's no need for a real debate. If we have learned anything from this election - If you want the political will of the people behind your ideas, overcome the impression that you couldn't care less about the people you need. The GOP has a lot in common with the values of Hispanic and black voters, in some instances much more so than the Democratic party. But it doesn't matter if those groups think they aren't welcome in the tribe.

Lightening up on immigration won't be enough. Like it or not, conservatives are going to need a much more thorough housecleaning if they want to survive in an increasingly diverse future. Here are some tips for the conservative media, right wing talk radio activists and the Tea Party republicans that might help you win elections in this new culturely diverse America:

- No more demagogic gratuitous ethnic mockery
- No more pretense that reverse racism is the real racism
- No more suggestions that minorities just want a handout
- No more screeching about the impending threat of Sharia law
- No more saturation coverage of the pathetic New Black Panthers
- No more complaining that blacks get to use the N word but whites don't
- No more summers of hate on Fox News
- No more tolerance for "The roots of Obama's rage" schtick
- No more tolerance in Obama has a "deep-seated hatred of white people"
- No more tolerance in claiming that "Obama's entire economic program is reparations"
- No more "In Obama's America", white kids get beat up by cheering black kids
- No more gleefully singing along to songs like "Barack the Magic Negro"
- No more refering to Obama and Halle Berry "Halfrican Americans"
- No more thinking people with penis's and vagina's have the same needs
- No more calling low income women who need birth control "sluts"

No more jeering at the mere concept of "diversity." And no more too-clever-by-half attempts to say all this stuff without really saying it, and then pretending to be shocked when you're called on it. Pretending might make you feel virtuous, but it doesn't fool anyone and it won't win you any new supporters or elections.

Superb post. Hope to see you around more often.

Wont happen, I'm a lurker. Family - business - hobbies, in that order. Anandtech is a valuable resource in tech reviews, previews and benchmarks and has a robust tech community. I dropped by to read Anands review on Intels new SSD, and just happen to be home with the flu and had some time to post my thoughts. This forum, though.. your just really in for the Lulz. I'm not interested in back and forth character assassinations, especially on a intenet message board, Cheers!

It isn't the truth that hurts, Matt, or not the truth as you see it. What hurts is that a fellow human being can be as blind and lost as you, the fear you engender in rational minds that people as lost as you are exist, the tremendous anxiety that somebody like you could gain great power and fuck up the world like you've fucked up your mind. You make normal minds deeply sad, deeply piteous, and very embarrassed they have to share the planet with people like you, the terrible humiliation we feel that some alien race might arrive and mistake you as representative of the human race. You are a deep embarrassment to anybody who still has some shreds of common sense left to them.

Ron Paul....viable candidate..........LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!
keep drinking the kool-aid man. ;)

But hey, be happy that Obama won, he can keep on systmatically taking away your rights right from under your nose.

That's some real "change" I can believe in. Not to mention his Marxist campaign slogan "Forward!"
