Ya, tatoo needle... that sounds like a good exlaination. I'm sure that's the only possible way she could have been infected. 😱

That really sucks for her.

Not anytime soon. It's a chronic illness. But she will eventually need a new liver.

<< Hepatitis C affects about 3.9 million Americans. It is spread by blood-to-blood contact, usually by sharing intravenous needles or through unprotected sex. Although much less common, hepatitis C can, as apparently is the case with Anderson, be spread through dirty piercing and tattooing tools. The disease causes swelling in the liver, which keeps the organ from performing its basic function of cleansing the blood, and can lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver failure. Between 8,000 and 10,000 people in America die each year due to complications from hepatitis C.

AIYA!!! sux for her. so when u say she will eventually need a new liver... whats that mean? she needs to hit the black market? 😛 ppl only have one liver.... right? two kidneys, one liver... if i recall correctly.

Most people with Hep C are 10-20 years older than Anderson . . . contracted through blood supply before universal screening (for those not owning up to unprotected sex, IV drug use). Chronic illness with slow progression to hepatic failure. There are limited medical treatments interferon and ribavirin . . . side effects often as bad as the disease. If worse comes to worse she can borrow a liver lobe from the living or wait for a loaner from the recently deceased.

Yes, only one liver.
BUT, the liver is one of the only (possibly the only?) organs in the body that is regenerative, meaning that a living person can donate just part of their liver. A friend of mine's father got Hep C back in the 70s and she donated like half of her liver to him, and they are both fine.
