Shite! 2x7900GTO or a 7950 GX2!!!

i have just one question.

suppose he spends 250x2=500 on 2 7900gto for sli.

and suppose G80 cost 600 dollars.

willhe return both cards in order to get 1 G80 paying 100 or will he get 250 of each G80 he buys ?

With G80 about a month from launch SLI is kinda a tough decision at this point. However... I was just reading up on the eVGA step up program last night. Each card is allowed to be 'stepped up' one time and one time only. So if you buy two eVGA cards, and register them you can step up each one. (Be aware eVGA doesnt cross-ship so you have to send in your card first before receiving the newer card) So you could go ahead and buy your two 7900GTOs and then within 3 months step them up to a G80 each. or you can just buy one high end eVGA card now and step it up later. Whichever you prefer.

well, the step up program was what really made me take a long hard look at the 7950 GX2. While it IS the fastest single card solution nvidia offers, its the performance level that I was after. be it two cards or one card, I wanted to flat out have a top 5 video setup. If I did get the 7950 GX2 and us the S.U. program, I would have had to go get a crappy 30 dollar video card and wait it out untill the new card came. by going SLI the the GTOs, when i DO start to step up, Ill stil have a killer card to use while the new card comes.

Thats basically what killed the deal for the 7950 GX2. Plus, I have to be honest, I wasnt too thrilled about the 7950's cooler. Just didnt seem like the worlds greatest design. I know that guys who have the card will say otherwise, but I would prefer my gfx solution to have the best possible access to cool incoming case air.

And for 250 a card shipped, it was a deal I couldnt pass up! I highly doubt that I will notice a performance difference with the slower memory. with the lifetime warranty the COVERS over clocking on my part, I feel confident that the SLI solution was the best choice for my rig.

Thanks again for all the last minute help with my dillemas guys, and hopefully this thread has helped a few others who were leaning on the edge. 250 a card for basically 7900GTX performance? good GOD GO GET ONE!

To each their own I guess. I doesn't really matter anymore and I wasn't trying to say that the GX2 is completely worthless. For those who need more PCI slots or don't have as much case room, or certain types of non-SLI motherboards, the GX2 is a damn good buy.

Honestly, I would have gotten a single card, and then upgraded to the G80 if i was in the OP situation.
Not BECUASE I have one now

each GTO uses only about 8amps at full load i believe. its something like 100 watts.

so you should be ok there.

i am not actualy sure which one is faster, though i suppose with a 7950gx2 you'd have the option of quad sli.

For raw performance per $$ the SLI GTO setup wins.

For the hit you'll take on your wallet with TWO tradups for the 8800GTX/GTS series, ouchie. For the excuse to get two 8800GTX on tradup though I think we are all grinning for you.

The 7950GX2 would have been great if you ever saw yourself upgrading/switching to a microATX, SFF, or using a system that can't do SLI. (i.e. Intel P965)
