Is this combo okay? Also is the knot properly tied?

The tie is too loud. If you are going to wear a black shirt, get a black tie.

The knot is ok, could have more well define on the edge.

Unless you're interviewing to work at a mall kiosk, don't wear a a black dress shirt. Don't make it worse by slapping that tie on it.

My suit is black. Is it better to go without a tie and black shirt, or with this tie and a white shirt? We're going to a bar later.

Suit or just suit jacket? If suit, go with the white shirt and tie. If jacket, go with white shirt and no tie.

black shirts go w/o tie. also, that tie goes with nothing, burn it please. and put the burning on youtube.

Half windsor knot looks like garbage. Look on youtube for how to tie a full windsor knot. Also, waiter's and basement dwelling mouth breathers are the only people who should feel okay wearing a black button up shirt with a tie.

The only way I would feel acceptable to appear in public in a black button up shirt is with jeans on. No dress pants.

A couple of notes:

- There is almost no situation in which you want to wear a black dress shirt. The exceptions are if you are employed as part of a wait service, or if you really know what you're doing, in which case you wouldn't have asked the question. (I know what I'm doing, but I still won't touch black shirts.)

- Full width ties are dead. Long live skinny ties! For summer, get a nice collection of cotton, linen and wool knit ties. For fall and winter, silk and silk knit. It basically follows the same rules as general clothing - heavy fabrics for colder weather, lighter for warmer.

- Don't shout using your tie; it's usually what people notice first anyways, and you don't need to overdo it. The GQ Guide to Ties is a pretty great walkthrough to basic concepts in the shirt-and-tie world.

Button-down collars with ties? Please.

Hell of a lot of spread collars, too. Hope your shape works with that.
