Shipping tracking numbers

Tell me, what is the point of tracking numbers if they don't scan the thing until right before it goes on the truck? This is for UPS btw. A week goes by with just "billing information received" and then all of a sudden they decide to scan it just before going out for delivery.

Awful system.

I don't have that experience often. Usually I get updates every time it reaches a new shipping/transportation point.

I have that issue with the USPS all the time. UPS does alright in the tracking department IMHO.

The USPS tracking sucks ass..they don't usually update for me until after it arrives, at which point, I've already opened it.

What they need is GPS tracking on the trucks with the route of the truck posted... this would be awesome to figure out ETA's

USPS has tracking for regular packages?
The only packages that USPS uses tracking on are Express Mail, Global Express Guaranteed, Express Mail International, and Priority Mail International.
Everything else uses Delivery Confirmation, which only lets you know when a package has arrived.

yep. its confirmation, not tracking. I think they still might update before delivery though. not positive

It does give details sometimes, but it's not touted as being a tracking service, so it's just a bonus being able to see where it's at.
I have had a few times over the years that it didn't show as being delivered until the next day, but I would assume it's more user error (on the part of the postman).

If you track from a website like Amazon or Newegg, it's almost always wrong. If you use the UPS website, it's pretty accurate, but sometimes it's still messed up.

Yeesh, this is the worst package delivery ever. It's out for delivery now, but they didn't deliver it because "THE APARTMENT NUMBER IS MISSING OR IS INCORRECT. UPS IS ATTEMPTING TO OBTAIN THIS INFORMATION."

this is exactly correct. If the employee doesn't scan it, or misses it, or the label is too messed up to scan (though then they are supposed to key enter the number) then you aren't going to see it.

Delivery confirmation is just that... delivery confirmation. Sometimes, the post office will scan it along the way, but it doesn't always do that. Any other updates besides delivery are just bonuses.

All my packages I "track" through them update like that.

That's a huge leak of information, there is no way they would ever make that information public.

They recycle the tracking numbers after a few years.
