Shipping something over 1lb

Just printed out a shipping label for a 1lb and some package and it came out to $8.40 or so on USPS and UPS.

1lb Priority is $4.80
<13 oz First class is $1.86 and up

Why the big jump? Cheaper alternatives?
I remember shipping stuff more than 1lb via Priority and it only costing $4.50 - $5.00, why is a 1lb 1oz now costing me $8?

USPS flat rate boxes?

It's 13x12x3, I adjusted the dimensions a bit (Under 12x12), but it's still $8 either way.

Small flat rate is much smaller and almost everything I mail in under 13oz so I use First Class for the $2-$2.50 it costs.

A large flat rate costs $9-$10 I think.

FedEx Ground is sometimes less expensive than UPS or USPS.
They may also offer an extra shipping 15% discount if your FedEx account is associated with an Amazon Marketplace account.
The 15% discount could then be used for any of your shipping, not just Amazon related ones.

Hmh...you're right. I just calculated this, shipping from east coast to west coast with a weight of 1lb 1oz, and it came out to $8.70 for regular Priority (not Flat Rate).

Wow prices have gone up it seems..??

I've only used FedEx once before and that was 2 years ago. UPS and USPS are available directly from Paypal and I usually use those since I've had no troubles at all and there is a UPS place a few blocks from me along with USPS drop-off boxes everywhere.

*FedEx ground gives me $8.60 so that's not helping

Hello and welcome to the new USPS. Everything is rounded now (since they know most people round themselves).

UP to 1lb = $5
UP to 2lb = $8
UP to 3lb = $10
etc.....

You could try rounding if its just a hair over like .01 but be very careful. It better be very close or it might get kicked out or if they weigh it when you drop it off. It would suck to come back for postage due.

What pisses me off is egregious cheaters who try ship everything for 1lb. Ive received obvious 2lb and 3lb packages before from ebay and elsewhere with 1lb postage. If my package was ever delayed or kicked out because they didnt ship properly and I would leave them a negative. Not worth it for a buck or two IMO.

I thought about it, but that's why I went with 2lbs in the end. It's just an 80% price hike was not something I expected.

also with priority mail the zone that the item is going from and to makes a difference...so for me, from ohio to california is always expensive no matter how light the item is.. but going to somewhere that is very close is much cheaper.. fwiw

Hmm I just checked and you are right.

CA to CA gives me the old rate, CA to AZ gives me a bit higher, across country gives me the flat $8 option.

Didn't use to be this way though. Good to know now though I guess.

Welcome to the shipping service that used to have low rates with not so good tracking. Now introducing higher rates with the same crappy tracking.

But how about $3-$5?

If you want your rep ruined as an online trader for $3-$5 thats up to you. It doesnt seem worth it to me especially when it takes a long time to build a good name.

In most cases 1 review ($3-$5) wouldn't "ruin" their rep. Now 1000 reviews ($3000-$5000) then you can see major impact.

Im not trying to argue with you or anything, if they are breaking the rules they should be responsible for that.

The buyer is paying for the shipping anyway and I might be upset if I payed $8 to ship it but the postage was only $5 becasue the shipper lied about the weight.

USPS will "return to sender" any item weighing more than 13 oz., that's deposited in a USPS mailbox on the street corner. Courtesy of "heightened security following 9/11".
