Woah, where are you buying your tobacco? I'm still getting about a carton out of $10 worth of tobacco here in upstate NY...just bought some this weekend from our local smoke shop.

Your smoke shop is selling old stock. Either that or they are labelling it "pipe tobacco", which is quasi-legal.

I was paying $15 for 150g of American Spirit, but I pretty much quit before the tax came into effect. I think they tax at $25 per pound now. Disgusting... I can't wait for the junk food taxes to start, so all the self satisfied twats that allowed tobacco users to be railroaded get to feel the pain too.

Weird. I'll ask the guys at the shop whats up. They told me nothing has been passed and that the costs would remain the same, that was last month though.

[EDIT] I just checked, the stuff I buy is labeled as pipe tobacco, I didn't realize that there was a difference, since it comes in the same quantities.

Thats it. See as a former smoker I'm not in tune, I made a mistake and misquoted. The tax went from a dollar or so per pound to up around $25 per pound. So a cartons worth if I recall was about 200 grams, and 450g per pound, yields about $12 per carton of tax. If I remember right it was something like $12-$18 per pound of "regular" cig tobacco. So that tax more than doubles it, bringing the per carton price up to around $25. This is way more than the $6 or so per carton.

You were right about the pipe tobacco. I don't think they've been hit with the same taxes; /yet/. A tip for RYOers... Prince Albert is a decent cigarette tobacco, though it's primarily(or used to be) for pipes. It's a tad heavy, but has a nice flavor. Better than a lot of the garbage that used to be sold as cigarette tobacco.

I didn't think so, it's still way cheaper than buying packs.

Violating interstate cigarette taxes is weak sauce. For some real fun, load up your trunk with smokes and drive to Canada. I think it's one of the few cases where they bring out their tank.

Yo can not ship cigarettes, roll-your-own tobacco and smokeless tobacco, but you can ship cigars. Their reasoning must be that 16 year olds don't smoke cigars. I did when I was 15. That was back in the days when anyone could buy cigs out of a vending machine or across the counter. I quit smoking anything at 32.

The law does permit infrequent lightweight shipments by age-verified adults to recipients who are at least the age of majority for purchase of tobacco. Shipments between businesses in the tobacco industry will also be permitted, as well as cigarettes sent to consumers age 21 and above for testing or public health purposes.

Most shipments will require photo identification and age verification consistent with the minimum age requirements in the locality of destination.

With the exception of shipments entirely within Alaska and Hawaii, shipments are permitted only via Express Mail and, with the exception of shipments from the United States to APO/FPO/DPO destinations, will be delivered using “hold for pickup” service at the destination Post Office. Why is Alaska and Hawaii excluded?

This addendum was recently added after parents of soldiers/sailors bitched about it.
You can ship 10 oz of cigs, 10x in a 30 day period to APO/FPO/DPO addresses. Who came up with 10 oz? The average cig weighs 5g, 100g/pack = ~3.5 oz, so 10 oz = ~3 packs.

And as of 2005 you can not ship cigs by the major carriers, UPS, Fed-EX, and DHL (are they still a company?).

This legislation has forced many NY Seneca Indians' on-line stores out of business. NY state is also going after the Seneca Indians again to get them to pay NY cig excise taxes. That's still in litagation. NY says it will help with their 1 billion dollar state deficit. There's still some Seneca on-line tobacco stores open and taking orders. They say they are using a private carrier, Pony Express?, but don't say which one.
