Shipping a computer...

Anyone know how to pack a computer so that it doesn't die during shipping? Also, what about PCs with big heatsinks or what not, couldn't that break off during shipping?

Sure could. Don't ship it with the HSF attached if it's a big heavy one.
Best thing to ship it in is the box that the case came in if you still have that.

Taking the PCI/AGP cards out will help prevent damage. Other than the cards and the HSF, you dont have much to worry about getting damaged.

The expansion cards are quite secure in their slots and buy a screw in the slot cover, so IMHO there is no need to remove them. As long as you don't have some exotic heatsink/fan on the system that you are shipping you should be able to leave it intact. After all most, if not all, systems that are purchased from e-tailers come preassembled.

I recommend that you use 2+ inches of foam around the case and double box if possible.

I've traveled with computers as checked baggage (on planes, that is). Yes, I recommend removing HSF. I've had optical drives break, so I would take those out. Sometimes I also remove the harddrives, but I haven't had one actually break.

Those airport people are rough with the baggage! I once had a case actually get bent out of shape! After reseating the components everything worked except for the CD burner.
