Shipping a comptuer a great distance

I need to ship a complete system to a friend who lives in another state.

I am not sure of the best way to ship it though. I was going to get the original box, plastic bag, and styrofoam that the case came in, and ship it in that. I was also going to fill the empty sides with packing styrofoam peanuts.

Is there anything else I could do to ensure its saftey? Shipping the parts dissambled is not an option either.

I've done that many times all over the US, no problem whatesoever. Actually what I always do is use the orginal case box, then get a slightly larger box and fill it with peanuts, and put the keyboard and mouse and whatever in the outter box. Just make sure you insure it and you'll be fine.

I'ts been awhile, actually what I always do is use the orginal case box, then get a slightly larger box and fill it with peanuts, and put the keyboard and mouse and whatever in the outter box. Never had anything break in shipping.

Sheesh, no wonder I could not find this, someone moved it into OT for some reason. 😕 Seems like its a general hardware concern to me, but oh well.

How much of a bigger box are we talking about? About an inch of extra space around the inner box? Just enough to fit a small keyboard box?

Suppose I do not need to send any keyboard/mouse/etc, would it be safer to use the outer box and fill it with packing peanuts?

I think I'd play it safe and still double box it, with at least an inch of peanuts. Also, there was a thread a couple weeks back where UPS basically destroyed a monitor in a box, so I'd go with fedex. Too lazy to find the post, but the pics were frightening.

Hmmm . . . I am not sure where the fedex shipping station is around here, UPS and USPS are just down the street. I'll have to check their site.
