Shims

Designed to prevent damage to the core of the processor from installing the heatsink. True, the heatsink can be installed quite safely without a shim, but some people have a knack for crushing cores - that's what the shim is for.
Note though that shims do NOT help with cooling at all; they are only designed to prevent core damage by imperfect heatsink installation methods.
 
No kidding. Are some chips more susceptible to cracking than others? I didn't have any problems installing my heatsink (i'm new to this, just built my first box). By 'crushing cores' do you mean smashing the heatsink into the cpu, or installing the heatsink improperly so it cracks when you start up the system?
 
It is a necesity for peace of mind. I've cracked two cores and I've been very careful... One was a Cerleron and the other a T-Bird.
