Shims

I'm a newbie putting together an Athlon XP system. I'm going to be using an SK-6 heatsink with the 38cfm Delta 60 mm fan (heard it's a loud one ), and I was wondering if you would suggest that I use a shim when installing the heatsink? I really don't feel like cracking my core, as this is my first time.. but I don't want a shim if it's going to lower my cooling performance. Little help?

The only benefit you get from a shim is not breaking your core while installing a heatsink./ If it's running fine w/o a shim. You don't need one.

AMD doesn't pick their retail heatsink out their ass. If you're a newbie, I strongly recommend you get a retail version of Athlon XP. You can use a shim too if you want. You don't need a SK-6 to run an Athlon XP reliably. You'd be better off with stock cooler. You don't realize how annoying the noise is until you experience it yourself and stock cooler is nice and quiet. The key in avoiding core breakage is to NEVER push on the heatsink itself during installation. Only touch the clips. You'll probably need to use a screw driver to push it by the way.

Shims have caused some problems by being to thick and by moveing around. I myself have never used a shim. I feel you dont need one as long as your carefull.

the first time i did it, i had an OEM 1.4 birdy with the sk6 and i didn't break the core.... but i broked the motherboard ^^... screw driver slipped...

Guys, Im using a ThermalRight SK-6 Copper Sink. The huge heavy sucker and it sits underneath a Delta 60MM Fan, the biggest and loudest in the industry! I do not use a shim!! If you are carefule, You dont need one. I really dont recommend a shim anyway, sometimes it effects the CPU touching the motherboard. This can cause a huge NEGATIVE effect. Think of the analogy of using a rubber when having sex!! Only this time, going without one is BEST!!!

Oh...And I forgot, I use an AMD Athlon 1.2gig, and the EpoX 8KHA+!! Can you say KT266 (A!!!)...ZOOOOOM

U don't need a shims. If u r a newbie, get someone to install the CPU for u. I've seen ppl fried their CPU using shims due to improper contact, non-contact & etc. There r still risk using shims.
