Aha, more detail here: http://www.cyclingnews.com/tec...o_launch_new_ultegra09

So I see some Dura-Ace 7900 features have reached Ultegra:

  • Hollow outer chainring and hidden chainring bolts
  • Shift cables now run beneath the handlebar tape. Brake-lever blades are composite. Lactic Acid Threshold claims these shifters will maintain B-level interoperability with 6600 equipment, unlike Dura-Ace's requirement that you use a 7900 front derailleur with the 7900 front shifter due to its altered actuation pattern. For this reason, I'm not sure if the 6700 front shifting will have the short stroke of 7900.
  • Brake calipers now feature the low-profile adjuster barrel and some slight lightening of the forgings (note the flutes in the caliper arms by the brake-pad slots)
  • The chain now features a master link and weight-relief slots on the inboard outer plates and the outboard inner plates, like Dura-Ace 7900
  • The revised short-cage rear derailleur is now officially cleared for use with 28-tooth cassettes, and there will be 10-speed cassettes available in the 11-28 combo hitherto only available in the ridiculously-expensive Dura-Ace 7900 series.
  • Shimano adds an Ultegra-level tubeless-compatible wheelset
  • According to the cyclingnews.com article, the double-chainring setup will be available in July.

Anyone else see anything interesting there?

is there a Shimano compact (50-34)?

edit: there is a compact available and the 28T sprocket is now officially supported

i know my uncle is working on something in terms of a bike company, i will let you guys know more once i have more information, etc... i know the plan, but not positive on everything so i cant name/say much.

True story: my brother is a member of Shimano's band (the son/heir of the company). Well, he is when he has time to play....

Dontcha think this cycling stuff is getting a little bit too into it? I mean, at some point, a brake pad is a brake pad...

"Brake calipers now feature the low-profile adjuster barrel" - ooh, not just any old adjuster barrel - LOW PROFILE!

You could say that about any hobby in the world couldnt you? New parts groups are like porno for bike geeks. Just like a new HS/Fan combo is like porno for computer geeks. everyone has hobbies and every hobbied end up with new items sooner or later and when they hit the streets the hobbyists get their undies all messed.

AND they now have the enhanced, third-generation dilithium crystals! 😉 Oh wait, that's the electronic-shift Dura-Ace Di2...

Actually, the low-profile adjuster barrel is a meaningful improvement in frame compatibility, particularly at the rear brake. Small frames can require quite a significant arch in the rear brake cable, and that's what Shimano was trying to address, because tight bends in the cables result in drag and poor response. It's a real-world problem.

Anyhow, yeah, Ultegra is enthusiast equipment, you don't need it to ride to the store for beer. But if you want to see "over the top," the top is a lot farther up than Ultegra... try this $2000+ rear hub, with power-measurement capabilities and 2.4GHz wireless transmission. That's right, we've got wireless bike parts now 😀

Based on the application and conditions, you may want a different type of brake pad, tires, etc...

Bah. Campy's got 11-Speed 😀
Yeah, but you're not supposed to expose their snazzy carbon UT cranksets to sunlight. I kid you not, it's in the owner's manual 😕 A case of CYA, I'm sure, but...

Edit: I will say this: That is one sexy crankset.

They also managed to lighten up the crankset by about 60 grams compared to stock Ultegra. I've been thinking about moving up to 175mm cranks anyway, so I'll be watching to see if they're priced low enough that I can afford them (I'm not a wealthy doctor/lawyer type).

I bike ride sometimes in the spring and fall, especially when it rains. But I beat up my bike real bad, that's why I have a cheap one. I ride mostly in the early early morning through neighborhoods and urban trails.
