St Johns Commandaria is a Cypriot drink. Some say it's reminiscent of a Port and others of Sherry. It's used in religious ceremonies there. It's sweet but not cloying. It's also quite strong. Definitely warmed me up, and in Cyprus it's usually already warm. I mean it's part of my heritage, I have a fondness for it. It's worth trying a bottle if you don't mind the sweet. There is quite a lot of history behind Commandaria.

Hey, I'd certainly give it a try. I'm not exactly shy about trying new forms of alcohol!

but the posts in this thread have been duly noted. I'm a heavy drinker so if I ever get down on my luck I'll be checking out discount Sherry's like a motherfucker.

I drank heavily for a while (by most standards, I still do) but if you have gotten yourself to the point of being constantly dehydrated, shaky, sweaty, and seeing spots... You have a serious problem.

I guess... for me, it was a matter of constantly feeling poisoned, and the only cure was more poison. I voluntarily detoxed for several weeks. I still drink, but I stick mostly to beer. It's much easier to titrate than booze.

Cooking port is easier to drink than cooking sherry if you're desperate!

Tell us more about that drink though!

Supermarket cooking wine in the US is heavily salted, so as cheap as it is, it's the equivalent of drinking ethanol-fortified sea water.

WTF! Really? That's evil.

Cooking wine/brandy/etc isn't really a thing. It's just usually used to refer to the cheap crap on the bottom shelf over here. The stuff that tramps drunk.

That's the tradeoff for not having it taxed or age restricted/specially licensed by supermarket chains here in this particular state.

(Fuck it, I'm way over 21 and cook liberally with bottom shelf wine already, just as you do.)

I don't feel dehydrated, or get sweaty or see spots or anything remotely like that. Ever. I wake up feeling fine after drinking. Phew. I started shaking recently a bit but my doctor thinks its from stopping a medication I took for a year and a half. I may have to get back on it even though I don't like it.

Glad you got your shit together, sounds like you were in a dangerous place man.

Was just gonna say this, the only person i know that drank that stuff was a hardcore alcoholic and it offered him the best bang per $
My bro did this. He used to buy the cheapest sherry he could find, which was cooking sherry. Best bang for buck.

He doesn't drink any more though.

Yeah my friend was the same...stopped drinking as well thankfully but we always had a lot of bottles for target practice behind his place.

i would say, neither. port is good when it's good, which means it's gotta be actually Porto port. and then, it's expensive. Sherry is a cheap drink, not necessarily what the drunks drink, but not a refined drink by any means, and yet it's still overpriced.
i would suggest .. a quality whisky. or better, a real italian wine, like brunello di montalcino, or amarone. or barolo. with $60 you can bag a quality bottle of any of these.

I prefer Thunderbird to Sherry.

Because, why not?

I'm thinking that what you guys think of as Sherry I wouldn't necessarily agree.
A friend poured me a really good sherry once. That's what put it in mind. He told me what it was, and said the store had one bottle left, but I didn't pursue it, and the name's lost :^(

It was like a great low proof whiskey, but full in flavor, and not too sweet. A perfect winter drink.

Theres kinda 4 main types of Sherry.

Fino, which is really, really dry (you'll need food after drinking it). Its pale and served chilled (it tastes gip warm).
Manzanilla which is like Fino but a bit less dry but served the same way.

Then you get to the ones I like.
Amontillado which is a pale golden colour, dry and amazing. Served cool.
Oloroso like Amotillado just more so. Its the one I like. Still dry but with a great depth of flavour and a darker colour that the rest. Still served cool but not too chilled.

They all come from Andalusia in Spain or its not Sherry.

Edit: None of them are in any way sweet! They are the "driest" drinks you'll drink.
