To your other comment. Just because someone wipes their ass (as I would have done) with a flag doesn't make them less than human. Nor does it account for those there either falsely imprisoned or incarcerated for non-violent "crimes".
 
James Ridgeway an author I thought made some good points about Prisons like the one Sheriff Arpaio runs:

The flags should never have been put in there and it's just costing the taxpayers more money but the prisoners have no right to destroy those flags and they should have to compensate for the costs of the flags.
 
The hardened criminals that tried marijuana and were given hard time should take a good long look at the flag placed in their cell and feel pride and gratitude rather than anger resentment.

I do think that this Sheriff is really "loony" and very dangerous. I remember reading he would put the prisoners out in tents outside in 110 degree weather and give them very little water. He would force many to wear ladies pink underwear to humiliate them. In my opinion this is not helping anyone and makes things much more dangerous for civilians living in Arizona. Many in these places have serious mental health issues, and this will make them much much worse. If they ever get out, they will be a ball of anger and hate, and whoa to the people who get in their path.

Isn't the whole point of prisons to keep people out of them? What good do these policies do for such a goal? America has the most prisoners per capita so I assume they're being tough on crime. What are the benefits of this? How does America compare to other western countries when it comes to crime?

What is the point of this? What good does it do? You keep prisoners out of prisons by playing patriotic songs... Makes no sense.

I like reading foreign/global (English speaking) forums and Americans have this tendency to turn any issue into another liberal vs conservative thing. It's amazing. There's two different schools of thought on what prisons should be. One side takes the view that prisons should reform so that people do not become repeat offenders and can become contributing members of society. The other side takes the view that when someone has done something worthy of being locked away from society, they deserve to be punished with uncomfortable conditions. As with most things, neither side is 100% right; you aren't going to reform a sociopath, and punishing non-violent offenders isn't likely to convert them into productive members of society. Sheriff Arpaio clearly believes that when someone has done something bad, they need to be punished for it; he doesn't take the long view about reintegration into society. Unfortunately, there's a lot of support for the pure "vengeance" side of prison here in the states, which is why we have such high rates of recidivism.

Actually his prisoners do wear pink underwear, and old timey prison uniforms with the black and white horizontal bar stripes. The given justification is to aid identification should an escape occur.

I would think the orange jumpsuits currently in use serve that purpose. The black and white uniforms just seem to be too "costumey" to be taken seriously.

In this way? Probably not. I agree with your earlier post that the flags were unneeded to begin with. He was probably looking for another way to mess with the prisoners. That's sadistic and a personality trait that probably isn't good for someone who has almost complete authority over other human beings.

Some of the things he does to make jail an uncomfortable place to be are ok like the pink underwear thing. Its stupid but not really a big thing.

You made a statement about innocents who are convicted. You made this statement again now. I was addressing that statement.

As to your other question, as long as the shake provided sufficient nutritional content and would not cause any health issues, then sure. I used to make these for myself back in college when I didn't have much time. Basically take my dinner, throw it in a blender, drink it down. Regardless, this is a slippery slope fallacy, so what is the point of this? He isn't giving them a shake, so how is that question even relevant.

Look, its very simple. Behave, and you get to eat a normal meal. Misbehave, and you get something that is healthful, but really doesn't taste. If giving prisoners bland tasting food is now considered inhumane treatment, then the state is probably going to come take my kids away. I gave them the choice of eating their dinner or going hungry last night. And they didn't get a cookie because they were fighting. Where did you take the leap that these people are less than human?

And again, I don't see how it is relevant whether someone was falsely imprisoned. Even if you are falsely imprisoned, it is in your best interest to behave. Taking a flag and wiping your ass with it is not considered behaving. What are you? An immature adolescent that scratches "fuck me please" into bathroom stalls? No, it doesn't make them less than human. Yes, it is a behavior problem. This isn't that complicated.

It's already uncomfortable being a cage and told when to sleep, eat, shower, when you can speak with family etc. Americans certainly revel in sadistic punishments. Sad that.
