Sherbet

I just finished reading this article, and this is something my boyfriend and I talk about probably more than what's normal. So how do you say it?

And just to start things off: I say Sherbet, but my boyfriend says Sherbert.

I got a complete history and such in the middle of a meeting with a local dairy company. I was kinda thinking "Wow... something I'll never need to reference in my LIFE." Figured ATOT would prove it wrong. Somehow it makes the pronunciation more acceptable when you realize that it's a Turkish creation (IIRC)

It can be properly pronounced either way. I just looked it up actually, and also found out that sherbert is Austrialian for an alcoholic beverage, especially beer.

it's not.

The fact that it's been so abused as to be accepted by the abusers does not mean it's really correct. There are other notable cases of word abuse becoming accepted by the masses-- but that doesn't make it good English. (I've always felt that people pronouncing it as "sherbert" came off as a mite retarded, although I try to be charitable.)

Yes, it is now a variant in some dictionaries, resulting from many people saying the word incorrectly. It is even harder for me to believe that people can actually spell it that way than to say it.

Many people say a word or two the wrong way. Sometimes an error catches on, for whatever reason.
