She did it again: Serena Williams blows up in U.S. Open loss

I agree with waggy, she was PO'd and bitchy but people only care because of the ugly 2009 incident (where the judge made a phantom foot fault call that incited her). Clearly part of the problem is cultural friction against old-school tennis manners, and it just happened to be the same chair umpire as in the previous incident. Rules are rules and I wouldn't defend the 2009 outburst that led to probation, but these quotes are not that big of a deal. This is NYC, not Wimbledon in front of a royal box.

Many top female tennis players seem to start doing that once they play for a while and get past 25 (out of my ass). Serena (not Venus) is the only one who can probably kick everyone's ass though...
I wouldn't want to meet Venus in a dark alley either, or anywhere for that matter. 😛

I watched the Saturday match where Serena played against the #1 ranked player. Serena totally owned her with over 12 aces. The Serena I watched on Sunday was not the same player. Perhaps she did not have enough rest. This might also explain her cranky attitude as well.
That's because Caroline Wozniacki is a defensive counter-puncher who may never win a major if she's up against an elite opponent in a final. Stosur flat out beat Serena to earn the title.

You made the same mistake Serena did. It was a different umpire.

Just because it's NYC doesn't mean you are allowed to act like stupid.

I don't track the chair umpires whatsoever, and that was the least important part of my opinion. I'm not defending boorish behavior per se but it's a person who grew up in Compton playing at the sometimes raucous U.S. Open. Like others have suggested, etiquette is a much bigger deal when it's tennis or golf. She was fined a token amount, but everybody has clearly talked about this way too much IMO. 😀

Even the TV announcers didn't quite know the rule, Johnny Mac thought playing a let would've been fair.

i wear headphones when i do my sport. people always try to mess me up, but i have highly intelligence to ignore those ignorant people. i just keep to myself and finish what i'm trying to accomplish.

i'm wondering if the other opponent would be charged with the same call if she did something similar like that.

She's a wise and beautiful woman and deserves to get beat. I love tennis, and I loved the swag that Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe played with, but they had character, Serena is just a wise and beautiful woman with an attitude who deserves a fucking slap.

I personally don't mind the rants but tennis has mostly been a more refined sport, almost like golf so it's not socially acceptable by the USTA or whatever. They tell the crowd to be silent during the serves, etc. as opposed to other sports like basketball, baseball, football, etc. where being rowdy is part of the game.

Athletes in these refined sports get knocked all the time if they lose their temper, such as golfers who use profanity or smack their clubs on the ground. Tennis players lose points for smashing their racket on the ground, same thing.

The small fine is all they can do, though. Even 50-100k is no big deal for these players. It's not like they can suspend her since she's too big of a crowd draw for the sponsors.

Thank you - this is EXACTLY the kind of racism/sexism I was talking about. You sound like you hate women in general, and in any case I can see no unbiased basis to like it when white men behave badly, and call a black woman who does the same thing a "wise and beautiful woman."

I am not defending Serena here. She was in the wrong. But I just watched the clip of this. How in the world can you think John McEnroe had character, but Serena doesn't? What she said and the way she said it was much lower key than the rants I have seen John McEnroe go on. Really???

I understand why she got angry, but I'm glad that it happened. I'm so damn sick of tennis players yelling "Come on!!" every time they get a point.

For those people complaining about Serena's grunts, I insist that you watch Victoria Azarenka play. Her grunt is so outrageous that no one will ever top it. It's funny that her first name is Victoria because I often refer to her as the one with the Victorian Fainting Grunt. It sounds like a lady in a Victorian period film who is so shocked that she faints.

w/e its an emotional sport and these are athletes w/ massive egos. dont understand why everyone's hating on her for being pissed off.

I also think that the whole silence during play thing in tennis is idiotic, and this is an extension of that general notion. A sport involving professional athletes should not require silence. Imagine if football or basketball players and their respective crowds had to be quiet during play.

I hate Serena, she's so annoying, such a diva. I'm a huge fan of Venus; a shame she had to leave the tournament. 🙁 Hopefully she makes it back for the Aussie.

I love how there is more attention paid in the media (and amongst its viewers) to the loser who threw a hissy fit, rather than to the actual winner. I couldn't even tell you the name of the person who won. It's very telling, this.
