I always shave with the grain at first then I go over it again against the grain. Its the only way I can get a smooth shave if I just shave with the grain then well I have ruff spots under my chin and stuff. It's not pretty :)

I shave with then against, but lately I've started to notice that I need to shave twice a day. Bummer.

I go against. But I can never get a close, thorough shave. Always have some stubble remaining... even with my Norelco.

Zenmervolt...Ingrown hairs almost always happen when you shave against the grain, not vice-versa.

Some people have to shave against the grain to get a good result but, when you do this , believe it or not, you are shaving hair follicle with it...moreso than shaving with the grain.

I found another way to avoid ingrowns is to soak the razor in hot water while I'm in the shower. This lessens the bacteria present on the razor.

Anyway, I shave with the grain on my neck while my face receives the up and down treatment!

I have really sensitive skin so I only shave every other day, with, then against the grain of coarse. I'd rather use my electric all the time, but they suck so I only use it when i'm in a rush.

I a good way to get a close shave if you have sensitive skin and don't like to go against the grain... For instance I shave my neck in a left-to-right up-to-down motion, so it is neither for nor against the grain, but a combo of both. I find I still get a close shave without the nicks/cuts and redness that way.

Ahhhhh ok, I'll bite...

Shaving against the grain mostly for me, although you are NOT supposed to do this as it increases your chance of getting ingrown hair.

I assume most men here shave in the morning, but try shaving before bed at night. Amazingly you wake up w/ a smooth shave that will last most of the day.

I have sensitive skin too, so it's every other day for me. Blonde hair minimizes appearance. :)

The best thing I've found for smoothness is against with a mach3 razor and clinique shave cream for men.

the clinique shave cream is awesome! It smells like ass, but really numbs your face and makes the shave smooth!

My old barber said that it's like this:

First off, try to shave after taking a hot shower since the steam will soften the bristles and make a closer, comfortable shave. Or use a moist hot towel pressed against the shaving area for a min or two. Work in lather, go with the grain for the first pass or two. Then you can go against the grain after that if you wish depending on your sensitivity.

Personally I do this and it works well. I also use a Mach 3 which is better than the old Sensor I used to use. I've been also shaved by a straight razor by my old barber before he retired and it was quite a close experience. With the facial hair and also with life in general. Scary.
